Summary 1. It was shown that N-acyl-3,3-dimethylcysteineβ-thiolactones are active acylating agents, similar in properties to mixed anhydrides. By the acylation of amino acids with theseβ-thiolactones, various polyamides can be prepared, and these include compounds containing residues of mercapto amino acids. A fundamentally new method for the synthesis of polypeptides has therefore been provided. 2. By the aid of the new method, di- and tri-peptides were prepared, and these include both polypeptides derived entirely from mercapto amino acids and also mixed polypeptides.
