    Notes: Abstract. Video provides a comprehensive visual record of environment activity over time. Thus, video data is an attractive source of information for the creation of virtual worlds which require some real-world fidelity. This paper describes the use of multiple streams of video data for the creation of immersive virtual environments. We outline our multiple perspective interactive video (MPI-Video) architecture which provides the infrastructure for the processing and analysis of multiple streams of video data. Our MPI-Video system performs automated analysis of the raw video and constructs a model of the environment and object activity within this environment. This model provides a comprehensive representation of the world monitored by the cameras which, in turn, can be used in the construction of a virtual world. In addition, using the information produced and maintained by the MPI-Video system, our immersive video system generates virtual video sequences. These are sequences of the dynamic environment from an arbitrary view point generated using the real camera data. Such sequences allow a user to navigate through the environment and provide a sense of immersion in the scene. We discuss results from our MPI-Video prototype, outline algorithms for the construction of virtual views and provide examples of a variety of such immersive video sequences.

    Notes: Summary Blood flow was measured in mature and immature dogs by means of tracer microspheres. Microspheres of 15 µm were found to be the most suitable size in the dog. Total body nonentrapment in the awake, standing dog is likely to be less than 10%. Cortical bone flood flow, devoid of periosteum and marrow, is 2.5 ml/100 g/min in mature dogs and 7.0 ml/100 g/min in immature dogs,P〈0.005. Blood flow in cancellous bone is greater than that in cortical bone in mature (P〈0.001) and immature (P〈0.02) dogs. Flow is different in different regions of a long bone because of different proportions of cortical and cancellous bone, probably because of interrelationships of function (surfaces undergoing remodeling) and, therefore, of energy metabolism and blood flow.

    Notes: Abstract BALB/c mice were inoculated intraperitoneally either once only, or up to four times at weekly intervals, with viable Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia conorii or the Israeli spotted fever group rickettsia. Sera collected one week after the last inoculation were tested for the presence of antibodies reactive with the above organisms by indirect fluorescent antibody testing and Western blot. With repeated inoculations there was a general progressive rise in homologous and heterologous immunofluorescence titers although the increase after the first inoculation was always the greatest. For each rickettsia, the homologous titers were higher than the heterologous titers. Western blots showed that the reactive antibodies were against rickettsial high molecular mass species specific protein antigens and homologous species-specific antibody reactions were detectable earlier than heterologous cross-reacting antibody reactions. Antibodies in mice sera did not react with the group specific lipopolysaccharide-like antigens of the rickettsiae although such reactivity was strong in Western blots with sera from patients suffering from acute Rickettsia conorii infections. Our findings suggest that the intraperitoneal route of inoculation of BALB/c mice can be used for the differentiation of spotted fever group rickettsiae.

    Notes: The recognition of the potential for enhanced fracture toughness that can be derived from controlled, stress-activated tetragonal (t) to monoclinic (m) transformation in ZrO2-based ceramics ushered in a new era in the development of the mechanical properties of engineering ceramics and provided a major impetus for broader-ranging research into the toughening mechanisms available to enhance the fracture properties of brittle-matrix materials. ZrO2-based systems have remained a major focal point for research as developments in understanding of the crystallography of the t→m transformation have led to more-complete descriptions of the origins of transformation toughening and definition of the features required of a transformation-toughening system. In parallel, there have been significant advances in the design and control of microstructure required to optimize mechanical properties in materials developed commercially. This review concentrates on the science of the t→m transformation in ZrO2 and its application in the modeling of transformation-toughening behavior, while also summarizing the microstructural control needed to use the benefits in ZrO2-toughened ceramics.

    Notes: For all its importance, what is actually said about money in Two Treatises is highly obscure. Comparison with Locke's 1668–74 writings on interest reveals a common understanding of the function of money, akin to that of contemporary mercantilists, which illuminates many difficulties in the chapter on property. These writings are the source of the main economic concepts in the Treatises; namely, labour as the active source of wealth (which along with the Roman Law notion of self-ownership provides the basis of Locke's theory of property); money overcoming the ‘spoliation limit’ on the accumulation of consumables, and the idea that money is created by and derives its value from consent (which Two Treatises exploits as a justification of the unequal distribution of property). Finally, the early writings suggest how implausible it is to read a labour theory of exchange value into the Treatises.
