    Notes: Abstract The calcitic and aragonitic shell of the fan mussel Pinna nobilis L. contains a record of the environmental changes experienced during its growth. Stable-isotope analyses of oxygen (18O:16O) in shell carbonate from the calcitic outer shell-layer have been used to validate the periodicity of clearly defined concentric rings on the aragonitic posterior adductor-muscle scar and to estimate the age and growth of fan mussels growing in Posidonia oceanica (L.) meadows at four locations on the south-east Spanish Mediterranean coast. The stable oxygen-isotope records obtained at intervals along a profile across the shell surface enabled seasonal changes in water temperature to be established, and hence seasonal patterns of shell growth to be inferred. Muscle-scar rings were found to be deposited annually in the shell in the spring and early summer (a period of increasing water temperatures), and represent an interruption in the migration of the posterior adductor muscle along the inner surface of the shell. In small pinnids (〈25 cm) accretion of the shell is rapid during the first year, but in the second year it is distinctly slower than at the same time the previous year. This slowing down in growth during the second year coincides with the appearance of the “first” distinct muscle-scar ring, indicating that Pinna nobilis does not form a muscle-scar ring during its first year of shell growth. Maximum growth rates were recorded amongst pinnids from Carboneras, where they achieved a length of 59 cm in 8 yr, whilst those from Aguamarga were estimated to be the oldest (attaining a length of 45 cm in 13 yr).

    Notes: Summary Changes in velocity sensitivity, receptive field (RF) position, and RF size were investigated in long oblique penetrations crossing the 17–18 border. The penetrations were histologically reconstructed and the border determined by cytoarchitectonics. In cortex subserving central and paracentral vision change in velocity sensitivity allowed a reasonable physiological identification of the 17–18 border. The physiological border correlates well with the histological border zone, best with its medial edge. Changes in RF position and RF size are of little use for physiological identification of the border in this region. In this cortical region area 18 representation of the vertical meridian (VM) has a high magnification factor. In cortex subserving peripheral vision, the change in velocity sensitivity was small and the change in RF position coincided with the cytoarchitectonics.

    Notes: Summary Recent publications have demonstrated a projection of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) onto extrastriate cortical regions in the old world monkey but have failed to identify a projection from this nucleus to V2, the area adjacent to the striate cortex. In this report we show that such a projection exists, as demonstrated by the retrograde transport of the fluorescent labels fast blue (FB) and diamidino yellow (DY). Neurons labelled after V2 injections are more scattered in the LGN than the cells backfilled by the V1 injections and mostly belong to the interlaminar zones and the S layers, regions which are largely devoid of neurons labelled by the V1 injections.

    Notes: Summary Thalamic projections to the visual cortex were investigated using the Horseradish peroxidase tracing technique. Besides confirmation of a distinct origin of thalamic projections to striate and extra-striate visual cortex, afferents of the intralaminar nuclei (ILN) to visual cortex were demonstrated. These projections of ILN were shown to be specific in that they terminate in areas 18, 19 and Clare Bishop but not area 17. The coupling of these intralaminar projections on to the extra-striate visual system is considered with respect to orientation of gaze.

    Notes: Summary Cats reared in stroboscopic illumination (strobe reared cats) have been found to have abnormal eye movements. Visual and vestibular evoked compensatory eye movements were inefficient. Vestibuloocular reflex in the dark had a maximum gain of 0.6 (1.0 in normal animals). Optokinetic nystagmus had a mean gain which approached unity only at stimulus velocities around 7 °/s (up to 30 °/s in normal animals). The asymmetry of the Optokinetic nystagmus resulting from monocular stimulation was more pronounced in strobe reared cat than in normal animals. Interaction between vestibulo-ocular reflex and Optokinetic nystagmus to give adequate compensatory eye movements was absent in strobe reared cats: visual suppression of vestibulo-ocular reflex was absent when the animal was rotated in an illuminated environment which remained stationary with respect to the head. Optokinetic nystagmus failed to improve the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex when the animal was rotated in a normally lit environment. The deprived animals showed no signs of recovery after 5 months exposure to normal lighting.

    Notes: Summary Using the retrograde tracers, fast blue and horseradish peroxidase we have shown the presence of projections from extensive regions of the frontoparietal and temporal cortex to areas 17, 18 and 19 in the newborn kitten. These projections are transitory as they do not exist in the adult cat. The anterograde transport of horseradish peroxidase conjugated with wheat germ agglutinin after injections in frontoparietal and temporal cortex revealed that these transitory projections terminate in the gray matter and that they could therefore play a functional role in the development of the visual cortex.

    Notes: Summary The laminar location of cytochrome oxidase staining has been compared in the lateral geniculate nucleus and area 17 in newborn and adult macaque monkeys. In area 17 of the adult, the distribution of cytochrome oxidase activity confirmed published findings. In the newborn animals, the tissue reacted as strongly for cytochrome oxidase as in the adult but the pattern of labelling was different in two respects. Firstly in layer 1 activity was stronger and occupied a wider portion of this layer. Secondly, cytochrome oxidase staining in layer 4C occupied two separate bands, a small narrow band at the bottom of 4Cβ and a wider one occupying the full width of 4Cα and spilling over into 4B. The pattern of cytochrome oxidase activity did not appear to be influenced by eccentricity in the newborn whereas, in the adult, label in 4C was more intense in cortex subserving central vision. In the lateral geniculate nucleus of the adult, the magnocellular layers and the most dorsal parvocellular layer reacted most strongly for cytochrome oxidase. In the newborn, parvocellular layers were more uniformly labelled and the difference between parvo and magnocellular layers more pronounced. These results are discussed in relationship to the development of thalamo-cortical projections in the monkey.

    Notes: Summary Lambs of various ages (4–30 days) were monocularly deprived for periods ranging from 4 to 51 days after which they were prepared for conventional electrophysiological recording from the striate cortex. Sufficient units were sampled to obtain a representative ocular dominance (OD) histogram. A second sample of units was then obtained after the lambs had been given an i.v. dose of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP; 0.5–5.3 mg/kg) which increases synaptic transmission. For four out of five lambs in which the deprivation had been of 4–5 days duration there was a significant increase in responsiveness of the deprived eye to stimulation after the 4-AP had been given. By contrast, only one out of four lambs which had been deprived for 19–51 days showed a significant recovery after 4-AP treatment. The results suggest that during the initial stages of monocular deprivation the deprived eye remains connected to, but is less effective in driving, cortical cells. One explanation of the failure to reactivate the deprived eye after long periods of deprivation is that the deprived eye becomes anatomically disconnected from cortical cells.
