Notes: Abstract The effect of ascorbic acid megadoses on gingival clinical parameters and vitamin content of blood and gingival tissue was studied. 10 nondeficient individuals, carefully matched according to age, periodontal status, and oral hygiene level, were divided into 2 groups: one received 250 mg q.i.d. of ascorbic acid and the other a placebo. After 1 week on the tablet all patients were scaled and root planed and received oral hygiene instructions. Blood samples and clinical parameters were obtained at baseline and 2, 6, and 7 weeks after. A gingival biopsy was taken at week 6.Correlations between the clinical parameters and the ascorbic acid levels at the different time periods revealed no significant differences between the vitamin and the placebo groups, therefore suggesting that the use of megadoses of vitamin C in normal human subjects does not have a predictable or strong effect on the gingival response to initial therapy.

Notes: Polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) function may be an important determinant in resistance against periodontitis. Since tobacco smoke may interfere with PMN function, the chemotactic response of PMN to serum and saliva was studied in smokers and nonsmokers and again in the same subjects after all smoked one cigarette. The assay used in this investigation appeared to be sensitive enough to detect some differences between polymorphonuclear leukocyte chemotaxis in some individuals. However, no effect of smoking of the ability of the cells to migrate of the ability of serum or serum or saliva to stimulate such migration was detected.

Notes: A group of smokers and a group of non-smokers were the participants in this study The groups were matched by age and gingival health. Oral polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) were harvested from the subjects by saline mouth rinses. These PMN were tested for their ability to phagocytize latex spheres and to exclude trypan blue. Tests were performed for smokers and non-smokers on three consecutive days, with identical procedures except that every participant smoked one cigarette on the second day immediately prior to cell collection, PMN harvested from the oral cavities of smokers were less vital as measured with the dye exclusion test and were less able to phagocytize particles on each experimental day. Smoking one cigarette immediately prior to cell collection resulted in a further decrease of these parameters for both smokers and non-smokers.

Notes: The correlations between manual dexterity test scores and oral hygiene scores and the correlations between the level of oral hygiene knowledge and oral hygiene scores were investigated in 59 students. Oral hygiene was measured by a modified Löe and Silness plaque index. The buccal and lingual plaque scores were considered together as were the mesial and distal scores. Dexterity was measured by a peg board test and oral hygiene knowledge was measured by a 15 question multiple choice test. Each subject was shown two audiovisual programs on oral hygiene. Plaque scores were measured at the beginning of the study, at 7 days (immediately after carrying out oral hygiene) and at 14 days.Manual dexterity of the right or preferred hand showed significant statistical correlations with all oral hygiene scores except the 14 day interproximal score. There was no significant correlation between left or nonpreferred hand on any of the plaque scores.A correlation was seen between knowledge of oral hygiene (as measured by the multiple choice test) and several of the oral hygiene scores. These correlations were less significant than that seen between dexterity and oral hygiene.

Notes: Human polymorphonuclear leukocytes were tested for chemotactic migration in the Boyden Chamber system. The attracting agent was activated human plasma. Experiments were carried out in a strictly anaerobic environment in which all the suspensions assumed a very low redox potential. Control experiments were carried out in an aerobic environment. Chemotactic migration occurred equally well under both conditions.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the crystallographic properties of three commercially plasma-flame-sprayed hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings on dental implants. For this purpose a Raman microprobe (MOLE U1000) was used. No preparation of the surfaces was necessary to examine the thin ceramic surface layers. Microspectra (5 µm) and macrospectra (100 µm) have been measured and compared to the spectra of crystalline and amorphous HAp as well as to the spectra of tricalciumphosphate. All implants showed spectra that were more like that of the amorphous phase of HAp than any of the other examined reference materials. However, the implant spectra exhibited an extra band that as yet has not been identified. This band is probably indicative of some structure within the sprayed amorphous phase. Such structural effects would result either directly from quenching from the plasma state or by incorporation of titanium into the lattice during plasma treatment.

Notes: Solid and granular porous hydroxylapatite implants were compared in the surgical treatment of angular interproximal periodontal defects in 10 subject. After completion of initial therapy, presurgical measurements of pocket depth, attachment level, gingival recession, gingival fluid and tooth mobility were recorded. Six months after the surgery the measurements were repeated. The use of both forms of porous hydroxylapatite resulted in reduction in pocket depth, and probebale attachment level gains as well as gingival recession and reduction of gingival fluid and tooth mobility. These changes were similar for both granular and solid forms of porous hydroxylapatite.
