Notizen: Abstract Jute yarn-Biopol® composites are prepared by hot-press moulding technique. Jute yarns of two varieties (7.36 lbs/spy and 11.86 lbs/spy) are used for composite fabrications. Effects of temperature, yarn amount, chemical modification like dewaxing (defatting), alkali treatment, graft copolymerization and orientation of yarn winding on the performance of resulting composites have been investigated. The mechanical properties like tensile strength, bending strength, impact strength and bending-E-modulus increased substantially in comparison to pure Biopol® as a result of reinforcement with jute yarns. The most remarkable observations of our present investigations include more than 150% enhancement in tensile strength, impact strength, bending-E-modulus and more than 50% enhancement in bending strength of the resulting composites as compared to pure Biopol® sheets. Amount of jute yarn, chemical modifications and measurement of mechanical properties on the direction of winding of yarns contribute significantly to the mechanical properties of resulting composites.

Notizen: Wood plastic composites (WPC) of simul were prepared by gamma radiation using butylacrylate (BA) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) as the monomer and methanol as the swelling agent at 9:1 (v/v) ratio. IR spectra of simul, bulk polymer of BA (or MMA) film, and WPC of different polymer loadings ranging from 18 to 115% were studied. Increase of the characteristic peak intensity at 1735 cm-1 (C=O vibration for acetyl groups) over that of 1620 cm-1 (conjugated aryl carbonyl groups) along with the increase of polymer loading of simul with the monomer indicates that the graft copolymerization took place between the monomer and the simul wood matrix. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Wood plastic composites (WPC) are prepared with low density wood simul under Co-60 gamma radiation using acrylamide (AM), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and styrene (ST) as the bulk monomers at different compositions with methanol used as swelling agent. The effect of additives, e.g., polyfunctional monomers and oligomers, used by 1% v/v or w/v, on the polymer loading and tensile strength of the composites is investigated. Polyfunctional monomers are N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), tripropylene gylcol diacrylate (TPGDA), and trimethylol propane triacrylate (TMPTA). Oligomer additives are urethane acrylate (UA), epoxy acrylate (EA), and polyester acrylate (PEA). Increased polymer loading (PL) with enhanced tensile strength (TS) are obtained with the composite. Incorporation of a small amount (1% v/v or w/v) of coadditives like sulfuric acid (H+), lithium nitrate (Li+), copper sulfate (Cu2+), and urea (U) into the impregnating solutions containing the additives has significantly influenced the PL and TS values of the WPC. Though the H+ ion has synergistically enhanced the PL, but it has drastically reduced the TS values. Li+ion has played a good role for the replacement of H+ion. Urea has substantially increased the PL values with relatively small enhancement of TS. Cu2+ ions have retained both PL and TS values of the WPC, which could be used as protective and preservative purposes of the composites. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Polymer films were prepared with UV radiation from urethane acrylate oligomer (LR 8739) mixed with a photoinitiator (Irgacur 184) and a number of reactive diluents chosen from monofunctional monomers (such as N-vinyl pyrrolidone, ethylhexyl acrylate, methoxyethyl acrylate, and hydroxyethyl methacrylate), difunctional monomers (hexane dioldiacrylate, butanediol diacrylate, and tripropylene diacrylate), and a trifunctional monomer (trimethylol propane triacrylate). The optimum concentrations of the photoinitiator, oligomer, and diluents were determined. Various properties of the cured films such as pendulum hardness, gel content, swelling ability, tensile strength, and elongation at break were also determined. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the diluents were correlated with tensile properties and those of the film. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Formulations were developed with urethane acrylate in combination with different monomers. The role of plasticizers used as coadditives in the formulations was investigated. Physical and mechanical properties of the UV-cured films were studied. Hessian cloths made with jute fibers were coated with these formulated solutions and cured under UV radiation. Though plasticizers decrease the tensile properties of the UV-cured films, but they substantially enhance both tensile strength by 80% and elongation of the coated hessian cloths by more than 300%. Uptake of water and moisture at different relative humidity conditions decreases significantly by the hessian cloths when coated with these formulations. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Ten different formulations are prepared with a urethane acrylate oligomer in combination with two monofunctional monomers (EHA with low Tg and NVP with a carboamide group) and a difunctional acrylate monomer (TPGDA) in the presence of a plasticizer. Polymer films are prepared with these formulated solutions under UV radiation. Their properties (gel, hardness, tensile characters, etc.) are determined. These solutions are coated on leather substrates and cured under UV radiation. The improvement of quality of leather is manifested through the enhancement of tensile strength and elongation of the coated leather. The coating also imparts high gloss on the leather surface as well as high wear resistance. It also protects the leather from the damage of weathering effect. The best formulation is determined to be the one containing NVP with a carboamide group and a plasticizer. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: A urethane diacrylate oligomer was used to develop 40 different formulations in combination with eight different reactive diluents in the presence of five different coadditives. Thin films were prepared with these formulated solutions under ionizing radiation using either electron beam (EB) or ultraviolet (UV) rays. In the latter case, a photoinitiator was incorporated into the formulation. Physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the cured films were studied. Tensile properties (strength and elongation) were almost double with the UV-cured films than those of the EB-cured films. Thermal behavior was also observed to be different in these two systems. These properties were correlated with the glass transition temperatures of the homopolymer of codiluents used. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Radiation-induced wood plastic composites (WPC) were prepared from five varieties of Bangladeshi timbers, using seven different types of monomers. The mixtures of double and triple monomers were investigated along with the single-monomer system for the preparation of composites. Among the three systems, single-monomer process showed the highest polymer loading with butylmethacrylate (BMA). Tensile strength (TS) property, represented as Tf = TSwpc/TSwood was determined. Highest Tf values were achieved with the soft wood. The effects of dose and dose rate, monomer concentration, and swelling agent were also studied. Suitable total dose was found to be 3 Mrad at 0.8 Mrad/h, and methanol exhibited the best swelling ability for the woods at a ratio of 1 : 9 v/v in all the monomer investigated.

Notizen: Different formulations were developed with an urethane oligomer combined with a number of reactive diluents with different functionalities such as N-vinylpyrrolidone (monofunctional), butanediol diacrylate (difunctional), tripropylene glycol diacrylate (difunctional), and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (trifunctional). The films were prepared with these formulations and cured under UV radiation in the presence of the photoinitiator Irgacura 184. Their properties were characterized. The effect of codiluents of low glass transition temperatures like ethyl hexyl acrylate and methoxyethyl acrylate on the properties of these films was studied. These formulations were then applied as thin coatings on the leather surface in order to study the improvement of the leather substrate. Both tensile strength and elongation of the treated leather increased. The gloss of the coated leather was also enhanced. Incorporation of a plasticizer into these systems substantially improved the rheological properties of the coated leather. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Twelve different formulations were developed with urethane acrylate oligomer in combination with a number of functional monomers in the presence of different additives, fillers, and plasticizers. Hessian cloth (jute product) was coated with these formulated solutions and cured under UV radiation. Enhancement of tensile strength and elongation was determined. Loss of these properties due to simulating weathering was also measured. The treated Hessian cloths were buried in soil, water, and mud for a long period and it was found that the samples put in mud were completely degradable while those treated in water and soil retained their tensile properties. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
