    Notes: A dominated-type convergence theorem is proved for the operator-valued Feynman integral defined via the Trotter product formula. This definition is intimately related to the one of Feynman and the physical setting is the same as in his original paper. The convergence result given here provides the final piece of a unifying and rather satisfactory picture of three approaches to the Feynman integral. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : Ozone is a powerful antimicrobial agent that is suitable for application in food in the gaseous and aqueous states. Molecular ozone or its decomposition products (for example, hydroxyl radical) inactivate microorganisms rapidly by reacting with intracellular enzymes, nucleic material and components of their cell envelope, spore coats, or viral capsids. Combination of ozone with appropriate initiators (for example, UV or H2O2) results in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that are potentially effective against the most resistant microorganisms; however, applications of AOPs in food are yet to be developed. When applied to food, ozone is generated on-site and it decomposes quickly, leaving no residues. Ozone is suitable for decontaminating produce, equipment, food-contact surfaces, and processing environment.

    Notes: Ozone was tested against Pseudomonas fluorescens, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Listeria monocytogenes. When kinetic data from a batch reactor were fitted to a dose-response model, a 2-phased linear relationship was observed. A continuous ozone reactor was developed to ensure a uniform exposure of bacterial cells to ozone and a constant concentration of ozone during the treatment. Survivors plots in the continuous system were linear initially, followed by a concave downward pattern. Exposure of bacteria to ozone at 2.5 ppm for 40 s caused 5 to 6 log decrease in count. Resistance of tested bacteria to ozone followed this descending order: E. coli O157:H7, P. fluorescens, L. mesenteroides, and L. monocytogenes.

    Notes: We report the electrical characteristics of heavily Si-doped zinc blende GaN epilayers deposited on β-SiC coated (001) Si substrates. The β-GaN films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy using a rf plasma discharge, nitrogen free-radical source, and the doping concentration in the films was controlled over the range 1.5×1018–3.0×1020 cm−3 by suitably adjusting the temperature of a Si effusion cell. We have found that Si incorporation in β-GaN results in a relatively deep donor level (∼62 meV below the conduction band edge at a carrier concentration at room temperature of 1018 cm−3). Also, we present evidence of simultaneous high mobility conduction band conduction (dominant at high temperatures) and low mobility impurity band conduction (dominant at temperatures 〈70 K) in heavily doped (nRT(approximately-greater-than)1019 cm−3) material.

    Notes: We report the growth of zinc blende-GaN epitaxial films on β-SiC coated (001) Si substrates using a molecular beam epitaxy approach in which the reactive nitrogen species are generated in a remote 13.56 MHz rf plasma discharge, nitrogen free-radical source. We postulate, based on optical emission spectroscopy studies of the remote plasma, that, in our study, nitrogen atoms are the species primarily responsible for efficient nitridation. The zinc blende nature of the GaN films was confirmed by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, ex situ x-ray diffraction, and ex situ low-temperature photoluminescence analyses. Our zinc blende-GaN film growth rates (∼0.3 μm/h) are higher than those reported to date that involve the use of electron cyclotron resonance type reactive nitrogen sources.

    Notes: A 12-year-old Korean girl gave a 9-year history of recurrent necrotizing papules and vesicles on the face, scalp and extremities. Skin biopsy specimens showed an atypical lymphoreticular infiltrate with vasculitis in the dermis and subcutis. In situ hybridization demonstrated latent infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) of the lymphoid cells in the dermis. The disease was diagnosed as an EBV-associated lymphoproliferative skin eruption presenting as recurrent necrotic papulovesicles. The patient subsequently developed large granular lymphocytic leukaemia of natural killer cell origin. Our observations suggest that a patient with an EBV-associated lymphoproliferative skin eruption presenting with recurrent necrotic papulovesicles might progress to develop leukaemia as well as lymphoma.

    Notes: The kinetics of growth of GaN/(0001) sapphire heteroepitaxial films have been examined in the relatively low substrate temperature range, 560–640 °C, using the reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) specular reflection intensity monitoring technique. In particular, an alternate element exposure method of growth was employed in which Ga and N atoms were supplied separately (rather than simultaneously, as in conventional molecular beam epitaxy) to the substrate with the inclusion of a time delay between successive Ga flux and N flux exposures. We interpret the observed time dependent recovery of the RHEED specular reflection intensity during the time delay phases to be associated with Ga–N surface molecule migration on Ga-terminated surfaces and the activation energy for this migration process was determined to be 1.45±0.25 eV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aim : To compare H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors as adjuvants to triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication.Methods : H. pylori-infected patients with peptic ulcer were randomized to receive either 300 mg nizatidine or 30 mg lansoprazole plus 1 g amoxicillin and 500 mg clarithromycin taken b.d. for 7 days. H. pylori eradication was assessed 4 weeks after therapy. Using meta-analytical techniques, we combined the results of this study with other randomized controlled comparisons of H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors as adjuvants to triple therapy.Results : One hundred and one patients were randomized. H. pylori eradication was 94% (47/50) [95% confidence interval (CI), 83–99%] (intention-to-treat) in the H2-receptor antagonist group vs. 86% (44/51) (95% CI, 74–94%) in the proton pump inhibitor group (P = 0.3). There has been a total of 12 similar studies (1415 patients). The overall efficacy was similar in intention-to-treat analysis: 78% (549/701) with H2-receptor antagonists vs. 81% (575/714) with proton pump inhibitors (odds ratio, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.66–1.12). A non-significant trend favouring H2-receptor antagonist (79% vs. 69%; odds ratio, 1.14; 95% CI, 0.76–1.71; P = 0.5) was seen in the comparison of clarithromycin-containing regimens. In contrast, in non-clarithromycin-containing trials, there was a slight, but significant, advantage with proton pump inhibitors (85% vs. 78%; odds ratio, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.45–0.92; P = 0.02).Conclusion : Overall, proton pump inhibitor andH2-receptor antagonist antisecretory agents appear to be similarly effective as adjuvants for H. pylori triple therapy. It is unlikely that the direct anti-H. pylori effect of proton pump inhibitors is responsible for their ability to enhance anti-H. pylori therapy.

    Notes: Effective anti-Helicobacter pylori therapies with few side-effects are needed. We previously showed that the regimen of amoxycillin, clarithromycin and an H2-receptor antagonist was effective in the United States. The current study tested whether this therapy would also be successful in Korea.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers received amoxycillin (750 mg t.d.s.) plus clarithromycin (500 mg t.d.s.) for 2 weeks and nizatidine 300 mg at bedtime for 6 weeks. Endoscopic examinations were performed before treatment and 4 or more weeks after ending antimicrobial therapy. H. pylori status was confirmed by rapid urease testing and histological examination of gastric antrum and corpus biopsies using the Genta stain. Antibiotic resistance was tested using the E-test method. Cure was defined as no evidence of H. pylori infection 4 or more weeks after ending therapy.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Seventy-two patients (59 males and 13 females; mean age 46 years), including 35 with duodenal ulcers, 30 with gastric ulcers and seven with both, were studied. H. pylori infection was cured in 95.8% (69/72 patients; 95% CI = 88.3–99.1%). Two of the treatment failures had culture data and one had pre-treatment resistance to clarithromycin. Smoking did not have an adverse effect on therapy. Ten patients (15%) developed side-effects during treatment, but all were mild and did not require treatment interruption. No case of reinfection was noted during follow-up.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:The combination of amoxycillin, clarithromycin and an H2-receptor antagonist is effective in Korean patients with H. pylori infection.
