Notes: Trichosporon cutaneum, a saprophytic fungal organism normally found in the soil, has been increasingly recognized as a cause of life-threatening systemic illness in immunosuppressed patients including those with leukaemia. Cutaneous involvement occurs in about 30% of patients with T. cutaneum septicaemia although disseminated folliculitis has not been described to our knowledge. We now describe a case of T. cutaneum follicultis due to fungaemia in a neutropenic patient.

Notes: Summary A number of anticancer drugs are known to produce pigmentary changes affecting the skin or nails. Among them, cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum)-induced hyperpigmentation has been described previously in only two cases. We describe an unusual case with hyperpigmentation confined to periungal areas of the hands and feet after treatment with cisplatin.

Notes: Summary Ota's naevus is among the dermal melanocytoses that show a distinct pattern involving skin innervated by the trigeminal nerve. Most cases present at birth or manifest clinically in early childhood. Cases of acquired lesions in adult onset have been reported rarely. We present two cases of late onset Ota's naevus which were confirmed by skin biopsies. Both patients underwent Q-switched alexandrite laser treatment with a dose of 8.0 J/cm2 given four or five times at 6 weekly intervals and showed some improvement.

Notes: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease commonly presents with cervical lymphadenopathy accompanied by fever, myalgia, neutropaenia, and rarely cutaneous eruption. Most cutaneous lesions present as erythematous macules, papules, plaques, nodules, or ulcers on the upper part of the body such as trunk, upper extremities, and face. We present a case of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease with a papulopustular eruption on the whole body including the lower extremities.

Notes: The optical and magneto-optical properties of ordered Fe3Pt have been investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy. The diagonal component of the optical conductivity tensor of the compound exhibits a broad absorption peak at about 2 eV, which is shifted by about 0.5 eV to lower energies from the corresponding one in pure bcc Fe. The Kerr angle spectrum of the compound disperses quite similarly in both spectral trend and magnitude to that of pure Fe below 3.5 eV but differently above it. The lower-energy shift of the 2-eV-absorption structure of the compound is interpreted as due to the shift of the minority-spin Fe-d states toward EF through the hybridization with Pt-d states. The Kerr effect of the compound is attributable to a large spin-orbit coupling in Pt as well as the well-hybridized spin-polarized bands. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoemission measurements with barium and single crystal LaB6 photocathodes are reported. The barium cathode is prepared by depositing a barium thin film onto a copper substrate. The LaB6 cathode is a single crystal cut in the 〈100〉 plane. Radiation from a nitrogen laser (337 nm, 10 ns) is polarized and strikes the cathode surface at variable angles. An electron quantum yield as high as 2×10−3 is observed with barium. The dependence of the quantum yield on the beam polarization and angle of incidence is investigated. The results indicate that higher quantum yields are achieved when the angles of polarization and incidence are such as to minimize the reflection coefficient. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hydrogen desorption from Si(100) surfaces during silane gas-source molecular beam epitaxy was investigated by temperature-dependent measurements on the growth rate (GR) and the surface hydrogen coverage (θ) during growth. By use of a prediction from a balance between adsorption and desorption of surface hydrogens that GR/θn should follow the Arrhenius relation, the reaction order n and the activation energy were obtained. It is most likely that the desorption proceeds via a first order reaction with the activation energy of 2.0 eV. This energy value is a reasonable one for the hydrogen desorption process and is compared to 1.29 eV for the growth rate itself.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of allergic patch test responses in patients with suspected fragrance allergy in Korea and to know the photoxic potentials of limited fragrance substances. Nine dermatology departments of university hospitals and one research institute of cosmetic company were participated in this study for the past 1 year. To inquire the specific fragrance allergens in Korea, eighteen fragrance ingredients were added to Korean standard series and fragrance series (Chemotechnique Diagnosis, Sweden). Among 422 patients, 83% were women and the most common topographic site was face. Except the fragrance mix and Balsam of Peru, Cinnamic alcohol and Sandalwood oil showed high frequency of positive responses. Among the added specific fragrance ingredients, 3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenen-1-yl) pent-4-en-2-ol, alpha-isomethyl-ionone(methyl ionone gamma), Lyral showed high positive responses. With eighteen added specific fragrance substances, we have also performed two in vitro phototoxicity tests, 3T3 NRU phototoxicity test and photohemolysis test. 3T3 NRU phototoxicity test is a screening method for DNA or cellular damage and Photohemolysis test is a useful screening method for phototoxic chemicals that cause oxygen-dependent membrane damage. Only Lyral showed phototoxicity in photohemolysis test and no other fragrance ubstances showed phototoxicity in 3T3 NRU phtototoxicity test. We think our data are useful to know the current status of the frequent fragrance allergens in our society and the possible phototoxic potency of limited fragrance substances.
