Notes: Abstract Background: To assess the accuracy of spiral computed tomography (CT) in predicting the resectability of Klatskin tumor as determined by vascular invasion. Methods: Twenty-one consecutive patients with Klatskin tumor who had undergone laparotomy were included in this study. The preoperative thin-section (5-mm-thick) spiral CT scans of these patients were assessed for the surgical resectability of tumor by evaluating the vascular invasion. The criterion for vascular invasion indicating unresectability was the tumoral invasion of the proper hepatic artery or main portal vein or simultaneous invasion of one side of the hepatic artery and the other side of the portal vein. Results: All nine patients with tumors thought to be unresectable on the basis of CT findings had tumors that were unresectable at surgery (positive predictive value, 100%). Of 12 patients with tumors thought to be resectable, six had resectable tumors (negative predictive value, 50%). Spiral CT failed to detect small hepatic metastasis (n= 1), lymph node metastasis (n= 1), extensive tumor (n= 2) and variation of bile duct (n= 2), which precluded surgical resection. Conclusion: Spiral CT is a reliable method for detecting vascular invasion and unresectable tumors. However, it has limitations in detecting variations of the bile duct or the intraductal extent of tumor.

Notes: Abstract Distribution and zoogeography of Podon schmackeri in the northwestern Pacific was studied on the basis of materials collected during the Cooperative Study of the Kuroshio and Adjacent Regions, 1965 to 1974. P. schmackeri was mainly distributed in waters along the coast of the Asian continent from the south of Vietnam to northern waters adjacent to Japan and the Kuroshio Extension. The Kuroshio Current seems to be important in transporting this species from Japanese coastal regions to the offshore waters of the Kuroshio Extension, whereas the Oyashio front forms the northern limit of its distribution. A few individuals found in the Oyashio region might be those transported by detached warm-core rings. This species occurred from April to August in the southern waters of Vietnam, whereas it appeared during the later period, June to September, in the northern waters of the Kuroshio Extension. Temperature and salinity ranged from 19.71° to 30.39°C and from 29.37 to 34.27‰, respectively. Maximum abundance of 79.2 individuals m-3 was recorded in the Japanese coastal region with 23.98°C and 33.50‰ water. Later occurrence in northern waters might be due to the delay in raising of the water temperature. Geographical variations in size were observed; individuals were smaller in standard length (0.34 to 0.50 mm, mean 0.42 mm) in southern waters of Kyushu, Japan, with a gradual increase toward northern waters of the Sea of Japan where size range was 0.49 to 0.65 mm (mean 0.57 mm). Geographical variations in fecundity in terms of mean number of embryos per batch was also detected. Fecundity was higher in southern waters of Kyushu and the Sea of Japan, 5.20 and 5.36, and lower in waters of southern Honshu and the Korea Strait, 2.35 and 3.90. These variations seemed to be derived from a compound effect of environmental conditions such as temperature, salinity and food availability.

Notes: Abstract Natural food items of five species of marine cladocerans, Evadne nordmanni, E. tergestina, Penilia avirostris, Podon leuckarti and P. polyphemoides, were investigated in the Inland Sea of Japan between April 1986 and May 1987. Gut content examination with SEM (scanning electron microscopy) revealed that feeding was largely limited to centric diatoms and a few exceptions of pennate diatoms and dinoflagellates. No animal remains were detected, and some unidentified materials were also found. Phytoplankton smaller than 35 μm in size (cell diameter in centric diatoms and longest dimension in others) was found most frequently in the gut of cladocerans. The role of grazing of marine cladocerans in trophodynamic pathways of the pelagic realm is discussed.

Notes: Aims:  To analyse the clinicopathological findings of extranasal CD56+ cytotoxic T- or NK-cell lymphomas in different organs and to compare Epstein–Barr virus (EBV)+ and EBV– lymphoma of non-blastoid cytomorphology. Methods and results:  Fifty-one cases of cCD3+ T-cell intracellular antigen (TIA-1)+ CD56+ lymphomas of extranodal/extranasal origin were included in the study. The primary sites of the CD56+ tumours were soft tissue (n = 10), the gastrointestinal (GI) tract (n = 13), the skin (n = 15), upper aerodigestive tract excluding nasal and nasopharyngeal regions (n = 11), the testis (n = 1), and parotid gland (n = 1). TCR gene rearrangement was detected in seven of 47 cases examined (16%). EBV was positive in 39 of 51 cases (76%). The positive rate of EBV was higher in tumours of soft tissue (80%), GI tract (92%), and skin (80%), and lowest in the upper aerodigestive tract excluding the nasal and nasopharyngeal region (50%). Tumours of the soft tissue and the upper aerodigestive tract tended to present with localized disease (P = 0.002). The 2-year survival rate was lowest for tumours of the GI tract (P = 0.0256). EBV– TCR– lymphoma showed less necrosis (P = 0.0133) and a better 2-year survival rate (P = 0.0066) than EBV+ TCR– lymphoma. Patients with EBV+ TCR+ lymphomas tended to present with localized disease, more often than EBV+ TCR– lymphoma (P = 0.0186). Significant prognostic factors in all CD56+ lymphomas were the site (P = 0.0256), EBV status (P = 0.0026), necrosis with or without perforation (P = 0.0338) and the presence of pleomorphic large tumour cells (P = 0.0428). Cox's regression analysis adjusting for other pathological parameters showed EBV status to be the only independent prognostic factor (P = 0.018).Conclusions:  Extranodal CD56+ EBV– lymphoma at extranasal sites is a clinically less aggressive malignancy and displays less necrosis than CD56+ EBV+ lymphoma. Because CD56+ EBV+ TCR+ lymphomas show similar pathological and clinical findings to CD56+ EBV+ TCR– lymphomas, nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphomas at extranasal sites should be diagnosed as such on the basis of EBV+, cytotoxic T or NK phenotype irrespective of the genotype determined by molecular study.
