    Notes: Summary In this note the geometry of multi-step methods is studied using invariant manifold theory for maps, as familiar from dynamical systems theory. This permits to associate a one-step method to each multi-step method to which the former is not only equivalent asymptotically, but equal in each step if the one-step method is used to produce the initial data of the multi-step method.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung. Differentialgleichungen behandeln, heisst (fast) nie durch Substitution (und andere Tricks) Lösungsformeln zu produzieren. Differentialgleichungen untersuchen bedeutet Geometrie treiben! Diese Erkenntnis ist nun mehr als hundert Jahre alt und wir verdanken sie dem französischen Mathematiker Jules Henri Poincaré. In diesem Artikel geht es um die Geometrie in der Nähe eines hyperbolischen Fixpunktes, insbesondere um seine stabile und instabile Mannigfaltigkeit. Diese Ergebnisse gehen auf Poincaré zurück. Wir folgen den Spuren Poincarés und seiner Nachfolger: Jaques Hadamard, Oskar Perron. Und wir schlagen den Bogen bis in die Gegenwart: Die Zahl der Anwendungen der Theorie der invarianten Mannigfaltigkeiten nimmt ständig zu. Im Zwillingsartikel [6] beschreiben wir den Zusammenhang zum Phänomen der Feigenbaum-Universalität.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung. Dass gewisse Phänomene robust sind, d. h. selbst unter mehr oder weniger stark veränderten Bedingungen im wesentlichen unverändert auftreten, ist eine praktisch und theoretisch enorm wichtige Tatsache und wohlbekannt. Dass sich hingegen der numerische Wert einer messbaren Grösse bei Veränderung der Voraussetzungen nicht ändert, ist ungewöhnlich. Genau darum geht es bei der sog. Feigenbaum-Universalität, die man bei rekursiv definierten Zahlfolgen (sog. eindimensionalen dynamischen Systemen) beobachten kann. Dieses überraschende Phänomen ruft nach einer Erklärung. Numerische Experimente können zwar den Tatbestand bestätigen, vermitteln aber keine tiefere Einsicht. Kann man das Phänomen verstehen? Die Antwort ist: Ja, es steckt ein schöner geometrischer Satz, der im Keim auf Poincaré zurückgeht, dahinter! Dies entdeckt zu haben, ist das Verdienst von M. Feigenbaum. In diesem Artikel stellen wir seine Ideen vor.
