Notizen: The present study was designed to ascertain retrospectively the validity of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in the treatment of prostate cancer in terms of prophylactic effects on the occurrence of flutamide-induced hepatopathy in a large number of patients surveyed in a multi-center cooperative study.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:One hundred and eighty-one patients (74.1 ± 4.9 years) with prostate cancer treated with flutamide with (n = 70) or without (n = 111) UDCA were retrospectively evaluated and the occurrence of hepatopathy was compared between these two patient groups.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Between patients treated with UDCA and those without it, no significant differences were noted in age, clinical stage, grade, duration of flutamide administration and serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels before treatment. However, there were significant differences in the presence or absence of previous treatments and treatments used together with flutamide. The incidence of hepatopathy was 11.4% (8/70) in patients with UDCA and 32.4% (36/111) in those without it, showing a statistically significant difference (P 〈 0.05). The hepatopathy-free rate obtained by the Kaplan–Meier method was also significantly higher in patients with UDCA (88.4% 1 year following flutamide administration) than that in those without it (59.6%) (P 〈 0.005).〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:These results suggest that UDCA has a prophylactic effect against flutamide-induced hepatopathy in patients with prostate cancer.

Notizen: Abstract We analyzed population dynamics and birth seasonality of wild bonobos at Wamba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, based on 20 years of observations (1976–1996). Wamba Bonobo infant mortality is much lower than that reported for chimpanzees. This seemes to be related to several socioecological characteristics of bonobos: the use of abundant fruit and herbaceous foods, larger food patch size, female feeding priority, and the absence of infanticide. The mean interval between live births of 4.8 years is shorter than those reported for chimpanzees, and some females simultaneously carried and nursed two successive offspring. Mother–offspring conflicts, such as refusal of suckling attempts and interference with mothers' copulation, which are common in chimpanzees, are rare in Wamba bonobos. A birth peak seems to occur during the light rainy season from March to May, just after the season with the least rainfall. This timing of births is similar to those reported for chimpanzee populations, and might benefit both mother and offspring by maximizing the amount of time before the next dry season.

Notizen: Abstract The spatial distribution and its change of a pygmy chimp population was studied. The association patterns of the population demonstrated the existence of a bisexual group whose members associate almost exclusively with one another. Further within the group there were cohesive subgroups consisting of both sexes. The bisexual subgroups were related to female clusters whose members share the smaller range than that of the group. Frequent associations among male and female pygmy chimps largely modified the general tendency that females use smaller areas than males. Social units common to two species of chimps are bisexual groups which give the outer frames for the formation of associations and also for the range use.
