    Notizen: A novel internal light-coupled optical device (ILCOD) array is proposed, where the element consists of a pnpn digital optoelectronic switch and an npn phototransistor. The ILCOD with seven point-symmetric elements was fabricated. Quenching the light emission of the center element due to light coupling between the peripheral elements is observed. This quenching is achieved with an input optical power of 2.5 μW.

    Notizen: Holographic recording on a real-time basis of two-dimensional images in an iron-doped lithium niobate fiber with a 200 μm diameter and 3 mm length is demonstrated for the first time. The erasure time constant as a function of readout beam power, the diffraction efficiency as a function of incident reference angle, and the results of angular-multiple recording of two images are shown. These results suggest that the LN fiber could replace bulk materials for holographic recordings in optical parallel processing.

    Notizen: It is verified experimentally that the modulation frequency of modulational instability (MI) levels off to a certain upper limit by the fourth-order dispersion of the optical fiber as the pump wavelength approaches the zero-dispersion wavelength in the anomalous spectral region. Modulation frequencies observed in optical fibers with various dispersion values range up to 7 THz for an input intensity of 15 W/70 μm2. This agrees well with the recently reported theoretical prediction based upon the four-photon mixing approach to MI.

    Notizen: Analysis of modulational instability in optical fibers based on a phase-matched four-photon mixing approach is extended by taking into account higher-order dispersion. Fourth-order dispersion governs the modulation frequency in a region near zero-dispersion wavelength, resulting in frequency saturation. The frequency decreases as group delay dispersion becomes dominant in comparison to the fourth-order dispersion. To deepen the modulation, a phase-matching condition for four-photon mixing must be satisfied. A technique is studied which uses externally controllable birefringence of optical fibers to achieve phase-matching at a given modulation frequency.

    Notizen: Propagation angle sensitivity of two-wave mixing is observed in a photorefractive BaTiO3 waveguide having a periodically reversed c-axis. The periodic reversal of the c-axis is realized for the first time by adopting an electrical poling technique in which the polarization of the applied electric field is cyclically reversed along the waveguide axis.

    Notizen: A photorefractive crystal waveguide with periodically reversed c axis (PCW-PX) is proposed for enhanced photorefractive two-wave mixing. In PCW-PXs, only the guided modes which have a particular propagation angle with respect to the waveguide axis are selectively coupled to the other guided modes. The mode-descriminative photorefractive coupling in two-wave mixing is experimentally verified in prepared BaTiO3 PCW-PXs.

    Notizen: Abstract Coherent optical code division multiplexing is a novel method using the phase of optical pulse as the bipolar code for future fiber-optic communication networks. Some optical bipolar codes with a repetition frequency over 10 GHz are generated experimentally and their fundamental properties are elucidated. The key features of the method, auto- and cross-correlation of these codes, are shown experimentally and compared with the theoretical results. Interference between two optical narrow pulses with high repetition frequency is investigated experimentally under various conditions of optical phase and wavelength as the basis of the method. A guaranty of realization of the technique is shown.

    Notizen: Abstract An ultrafast photonic asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch is proposed that incorporates a holographic buffer memory and an optical parallel routing controller. Ultrafast serial-to-parallel conversion of the temporal profiles of optical cells into spatial patterns is used to process optical cells in space in a parallel manner. The spatial pattern of the data payload is holographically recorded as a page in the optical buffer memory. The routing control to establish the switching state consists of header recognition performed by optical matched filtering, followed by control signal generation via reference to a lookup table. The ultimate throughput of the switch is expected to be 103 Tb/s with line bit-rates of 17 Tb/s.

    Notizen: Abstract Novel applications of photorefractive effect to optical signal processing are proposed and demonstrated. The applications of two-wave mixing (2-WM) in a bulk photorefractive crystal include logic operations and cross connect. Photorefractive crystal waveguide (PCW) is another primary concern. Holographic storage of Fourier transformed image in PCW and its application to optical neural network, two-dimensional array of PCW as a storage device, phase conjugate mirror using PCW, and structural consideration of PCW for efficient 2-WM are investigated. In the experiments,LiNbO 3 andBaTiO 3 waveguides are used.BaTiO 3 waveguide will be tested here for the first time. In a long-term prospect, all these technologies will eventually find important roles in optical signal processing.
