Notes: Abstract Nuclear matrix elements of the two-neutrino and neutrinolessββ decays of48Ca(0 g.s. + )→48Ti(0 g.s. + ) are calculated by shell model and QRPA. The two-neutrino matrix elementM GT 2v is rather reliably evaluated in the QRPA approach by a careful fit of the particle-particle interaction strength in the 1+ channel, which governs the spinisospin ground-state correlations. The shell-model value ofM GT 2v depends not only on the 1+ interaction but largely on the pairing and quadrupole interactions. Concerning the neutrinoless-mode nuclear matrix elements, the shell model gives generally smaller values than the QRPA. A detailed analysis indicates that the discrepancies originate mainly from the truncation of shell-model configurations (fp-space). The QRPA calculation in a larger model space well takes into account transitions from/to single-particle orbits far from the Fermi surface, and those transitions give rise to sizable contributions because of large momentum transfers due to the exchange of a virtual neutrino.

Notes: Abstract Matrix elements for 0νββ decay of76Ge,82Se,116Cd,128,130Te,136Xe and150Nd are calculated combining proton-neutron quasiparticle RPA wave functions with the operator expansion method (OEM). The differences between OEM and earlier QRPA calculations, using the closure approximation, are investigated in detail. Special emphasis is put on the discussion on the differences between the 2νββ and the 0νββ mode, since currently 0ν matrix elements can only indirectly be tested. By a comparison with experimental data upper limits on the effective neutrino mass are derived.

Notes: Abstract We present calculations of the nuclear from factors for spin-dependent elastic scattering of dark matter WIMPs from123Te and131Xe isotopes, proposed to be used for dark matter detection. A method based on the theory of finite Fermi systems was used to describe the reduction of the single-particle spin-dependent matrix elements in the nuclear medium. Nucleon single-particle states were calculated in a realistic shell model potential; pairing effects were treated within the BCS model. The coupling of the lowest single-particle levels in123Te to collective 2+ excitations of the core was taken into account phenomenologically. The calculated nuclear form factors are considerably less then the single-particle ones for low momentum transfer. At high momentum transfer some dynamical amplification takes place due to the pion exchange term in the effective nuclear interaction. But as the momentum transfer increases, the difference disappears, the momentum transfer increases and the quenching effect disappears. The shape of the nuclear form factor for the131Xe isotope differs from the one obtained using an oscillator basis.

Notes: Abstract We present calculations of the quenching of the spin-dependent elastic scattering cross section for dark matter WIMPs on heavy nuclei. The theory of finite Fermi systems was used to describe the behavior of the nuclear spin matrix elements in the nuclear medium. The results of the calculations for planned dark matter detector nuclei are not only always smaller than corresponding single particle estimations but in some cases also differ from the ones obtained by using measured nuclear magnetic moments.

Notes: Abstract Reliable calculations of nuclear matrix elements are a prerequisite for the determination of the effective neutrino mass and other particle physics parameters from neutrinoless double beta decay. Here, the operator expansion method is improved by including Coulomb, tensor and central interactions simultaneously. Furthermore, the formalism of the OEM is extended to those matrix elements necessary to extract the right-handed parameters 〈λ 〉 and 〈η 〉 from 0νββ decay. OEM includes the dependence of the nuclear matrix elements on the intermediate states implicitly and can therefore be understood as a step beyond the closure approximation. Numerical studies are carried out for the isotope76Ge combining the OEM expressions with ground-state wave functions calculated within a proton-neutron quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (pn-QRPA) model. The influence and relative importance of central, tensor and Coulomb interactions is investigated. Within the OEM, contributions from the Coulomb force are found to be negligible in 0νββ decay, while the tensor force leads to a moderate change of the results, of the order of (10–30)%, giving a better agreement between sets of calculations which employ different NN-interactions. Generally, results of the OEM+QRPA calculation are similar to previous calculations of 0νββ decay matrix elements, indicating that 0νββ decay is not sensitive to model approximations and might therefore be more accurately calculated than the strongly suppressed 2νββ decay matrix elements.

Notes: Abstract A comprehensive representation is presented of a generalized form of the proton-neutron quasiparticle RPA model, originally introduced by Halbleib and Sorensen almost thirty years ago. The model uses separable Gamow-Teller forces, including, in addition to the particle-hole force of the former model, the particle-particle force, which is of decisive importance for β+ decay andββ decay. The above model has further been extended to the treatment of odd-odd nuclei. An extension is also made to transitions from nuclear excited states. This is essential for calculations of nuclear weak transition rates in the high-temperature interior of massive stars. Complementing the discussion of Halbleib and Sorensen on the particle-hole force, the structure of the RPA dispersion relation is discussed with emphasis on effects of the particle-particle force.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear matrix elements for double positron emisson (β + β +), positron emission/electron capture (β +/ EC) and double electron capture (EC/EC) in the 2νββ decay mode and forβ + β + andβ +/EC decay in the 0νββ mode are calculated for the experimentally most promising isotopes58Ni,78Kr,96Ru,106Cd,124Xe,130Ba and136Ce within pn-QRPA. We point out that the matrix element for the 2νβ +/EC decay differs from the 2νβ + β + matrix element, an effect not considered previously. For the neutrino accompanied decays our calculation predicts for theβ +/EC and the EC/EC mode half lives which are shorter typically by 4–7 orders of magnitude than those for the double positron emission. However, even for the best candidates typical values for 2νβ +/EC (2ν EC/EC) are still in the range of ∼1022 ((some) 1021) years. For 0νββ decay we have calculated all matrix elements relevant for both, the mass mechanism and the right-handed currents for the first time complete. A detailed discussion of the differences between the 0νβ +β+, the 0νβ +/EC and 0νβ − β − decay is given.

Notes: Abstract Half life limits for theββ 2v+0v decay of76Ge to excited states of76Se are deduced from the background spectrum of a passive shielding of zone refined germanium (139.5 kg). A special low-activity HPGe-detector (102 ccm) was mounted inside this shielding to search for the transition photons emitted in the decay of the excited states. The resulting limits for the (0+→2 1 + and the (0+→0 1 + ) transition are 6.3·1020 y (68%cl).
