    Notes: The structure at 20 K of fully deuterated [Pt(en)2][Pt(en)2I2](ClO4)4, where en = ethylenediamine, has been determined by neutron diffraction on a single-crystal. It is shown that the symmetry is monoclinic with cell parameters a = 16.650 (7), b = 5.760 (2), c = 14.751 (2) Å and β = 99.19 (1)°, that is, with respect to the previously reported room-temperature structures, a doubling of the c parameter is observed. The space group is C2/c and the refinements lead to an R value of 0.0374. All the bond lengths (C—C, C—N, C—D, N—D and Cl—O) and angles are consistent with the expected values and the main difference with respect to the previously reported room-temperature structures results in an ordering of the stacking of the ethylenediamines. The iodines are distributed over two sites, which gives two Pt—I distances, 2.712 (3) Å, attributed to the PtIV—I bond, and 3.048 (3) Å, attributed to PtII—I. Actually, very weak diffraction peaks that provide evidence for an additional doubling of the a and b parameters are also observed and a space group C2 is therefore proposed. This could result from a very slight ordering of the chains with respect to one another, but, due to the weakness of such signals and the large number of atoms to be considered, no reliable refinement has been obtained in C2. On the other hand, on heating the crystal the diffraction peaks with I odd greatly decrease in intensity between 150 and 160 K, which unambiguously argues for the existence of a phase transition presumably connected to an order—disorder of the ethylenediamines.

    Notes: It is thought that hydrogen bonding is responsible for the ferroelectricity in ammonium tetrafluoroberyllate, (NH_{4})_{2}BeF_{4}. In the past X-ray data have been collected, but these did not permit accurate determination of the H-atom positions. In order to obtain more accurate information the neutron structures have now been determined for the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases. Going from the paraelectric to the ferroelectric phase, both the BeF_4^{2-} and the NH_4^+ ions rotate and shift from the mirror planes of the paraelectric phase. This results in removal of the mirror-plane symmetry and formation of a superlattice with the a axis doubled. Along the polar c axis, the NH_4^+ ions move towards the BeF_4^{2-} ions within chains of molecules and the chains move slightly relative to one another. The rotations and translations give rise to stronger hydrogen-bonding interactions.

    Notes: The structure of β-Cs3(HSO4)2[H2−x(SxP1−x)O4] has been examined by single-crystal neutron diffraction at 15 K. The compound crystallizes in space group C2/c and contains four formula units in the unit cell, with lattice parameters a = 19.769 (9), b = 7.685 (2), c = 8.858 (3) Å and β = 100.60 (4)°. Refinement of P, S and H site occupancies indicated that the value of x (in the stoichiometry) is 0.500 (6). This, together with the unit-cell volume of 1322.8 (14) Å3, implies a density of 3.463 Mg m−3. The structure contains zigzag rows of XO4 anions, where X = P or S, that alternate, in a checkerboard fashion, with zigzag rows of Cs cations. Moreover, there is one proton site, H(3), with an occupancy of 0.25 and one X-atom site, X(1), that is occupied by 0.5 P and 0.5 S. These features are in general agreement with a previous X-ray structure determination carried out at 298 K. In contrast to the X-ray study, however, it was found that two different structural models adequately fit the diffraction data. In the first model, the proton vacancies and the P atoms were assumed to be randomly distributed over the H(3) and X(1) sites, respectively, and to have no impact on the local structure. In the second model, several atoms were assigned split occupancies over two neighboring sites, to reflect the presence or absence of a proton vacancy, and the presence of P or S on the X(1) site. Refinement assuming the first model, in which anisotropic displacement parameters for 12 of 14 atom sites in the asymmetric unit were employed, yielded residuals wR(F2) = 0.084 and wR(F) = 0.038. For the second model, in which anisotropic displacement parameters were utilized for only the five atoms that were not split relative to the first model, the residuals were wR(F2) = 0.081 and wR(F) = 0.036.

    Notes: Spermine phosphate hexahydrate crystallizes in space group P21/a with unit-cell dimensions a = 7.931 (1), b = 23.158 (5), c = 6.856 (2) Å, and \beta = 113.44 (2)° at 125 K with unit-cell contents [(C10H30N4)^{4+}_{2} (HPO4)^{2-}_{4}.12H2O]. The packing of spermines and monohydrogen phosphates in this crystal structure has features which may be relevant to the binding of spermine to DNA. Another important structural feature is the presence of channels containing water that is hydrogen bonded as in ice-Ih with disordered protons. The channels occur between sheets of spermine long chains and are also bordered by hydrogen-bonded monohydrogen phosphate chains. The hydrogen-bonding scheme of these water chains proposed on the basis of an earlier X-ray study is now confirmed. Nuclear positions, anisotropic mean-square (m.s.) displacements, an overall scale factor and two extinction parameters (\rho and g) were refined using full-matrix least-squares giving values of R(F^{2}_{o}) = 0.09, Rw(F^{2}_{o}) = 0.11 and S = 1.02. Thermal vibrational analysis revealed that the backbone of the spermine cation can be described as a single rigid segment with a substantial libration of 27 deg2 around the spermine molecular long axis.
