    Notes: Abstract The cellular long-chain fatty acids of 36 strains representing 18 genera of the Saccharomycetaceae, Endomycetaceae, Metchnikowiaceae, Saccharomycodaceae, Schizosaccharomycetaceae and Dipodascaceae were extracted and analyzed as methyl esters by gas chromatography. On the basis of their fatty acid content the set of strains was divided into 6 groups, coinciding with the above families. The members of the Saccharomycetaceae (group I) had a high percentage of oleic acid while the strains classified under the Endomycetaceae (group II) and Metchnikowiaceae (group III) were characterized by oleic acid and linoleic acid as major fatty acids. The Saccharomycodaceae (group IV) had the highest percentage of palmitoleic acid. The Schizosaccharomycetaceae (group V) had the highest percentage of oleic acid, while the Dipodascaceae (group VI) were characterized by a high percentage of linoleic acid.

    Notes: Abstract The taxonomic importance of fatty acid composition at genus and sub-genus level was evaluated by analysing the fatty acid composition of fourteen different Microcystis isolates and seven additional members of the order Chroococcales. Fatty acid composition proved to be consistent within isolates. Isolates were clustered into two major groups, namely A and B. Group B contained all the Microcystis isolates and was further divided into subgroups of varying similarity indicating the existence of different taxa. The Microcystis isolates were characterised by a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (27–44%) and a low content of palmitoleate. The test organisms were arranged in a scheme indicating their possible phylogenetic relationship based on fatty acid composition and other phenotypic characteristics. According to our data the toxic strains, represented by different isolates, of Microcystis appear as a distinct group. Furthermore two dubious species namely Microcystis incerta and a Synechocystis sp. could clearly be reasigned to different genera. The results demonstrated that fatty acid composition is an effective taxonomic tool in clarifying taxonomical problems of Microcystis isolates.

    Notes: Abstract The genus Nadsonia Sydow is revised on the basis of morphology, physiology, amino acid and fatty acid composition, electrophoretic patterns of some enzymes and DNA relatedness. Two species, N. commutata (type CBS 6640) and N. fulvescens, with two varieties, N. fulvescens var. fulvescens (type CBS 2596) and N. fulvescens var. elongata (type CBS 2594) nov. comb. are recognized.     Notes: Abstract Lipid analyses were performed on 28 strains of various species of the genus Mucor. In shake flasks with glucose as carbon source, the gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content in the neutral lipid (NL) fraction of some Mucor species was up to 38 mg GLA/g dry biomass. Some Mucor species produced more than 20% (w/w) stearic acid (18:0) and more than 60% of their NL content as symmetrical triacylglycerols (SUS-TAGs) which corresponded to those of cocoa butter. Three Mucor species were evaluated in terms of the production of SUS-TAGs and GLA in pH-stat, fed-batch cultures in an air-lift fermenter with acetic acid as titrant and carbon source. Mucor circinelloides f. circinelloides CBS 108.16 accumulated 27% 18:0 in the NL fraction, which constituted approximately 40% of the dry biomass. In this case, the NL fraction contained more than 70% (w/w) SUS-TAGs.

    Notes: Abstract Hydroxy long-chain fatty acids occur widely in animals and plants and have important physiological activities in these eukaryotes. There are indications that these compounds are also common and important in fungi. The occurrence of hydroxy-polyunsaturated fatty acids (hydroxy-PUFAs) is of biotechnological importance, because these compounds are potentially high-value lipid products with medical applications. This review pays particular attention to the production of hydroxy-PUFAs by yeasts and other fungi. Hydroxy-PUFAs derived from lipoxygenase activity appear to be present in most fungi, while hydroxy-PUFAs from cyclooxygenase activity (i.e. prostaglandins) have mainly been implicated in the Oomycota and in yeasts from the genus Dipodascopsis. The occurrence of other hydroxy long-chain fatty acids in fungi is also discussed briefly; these include hydroxy fatty acids that are generally associated with cytochrome P-450 monooxygenase activity (i.e. terminal and sub-terminal hydroxy acids and diols derived from the corresponding epoxides) as well as 2-hydroxy-fatty acids and 3-hydroxy-fatty acids.

    Notes: Summary The production of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) by Mucor circinelloides CBS 203.28 and M. rouxii CBS 416.77 in fed-batch cultures operated in pH-stat mode with acetic acid as carbon substrate and titrant compared favourably with the performance of M. circinelloides in batch culture on glucose. On acetic acid M. circinelloides accumulated up to 39.8 mg GLA/g biomass, with a crude oil content of 28% containing 91% neutral lipids. The GLA content of the neutral lipid fraction was 15.6%.
