Abstract The antibiotic tetracycline was used in the experiments as a fluorescent probe for Ca++ ions in rat liver mitochondria. Incubation of isolated mitochondria under anaerobic conditions at 20°C led to rapid (30 min) loss of ability of the mitochondria to accumulate Ca++. Disturbances of the Ca++-accumulating power of the mitochondria develop much more slowly (over 2 h) and irregularly during survival of the liver: the maximal values are found after survival for 5–10 and 60 min.
