    Notes: Abstract Phylogenetic relationships among the seven species of deep-sea giant clams Calyptogena (Bivalvia: Vesicomyidae) collected around Japan were examined using parts of nucleotide sequences of mitochondrial genes for cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and cytochrome oxidase III (COIII) and the encoded amino acid sequences. The seven species were C. soyoae (Sagami Bay), C. fausta (Suruga Bay), C. kaikoi (Nankai Trough), C. nautilei (Nankai Trough), C. phaseoliformis (Japan Trench), C. solidissima (Minami-Ensei Knoll, Okinawa Trough) and Calyptogena sp. (Iheya Ridge, Okinawa Trough). A clear phylogenetic split was observed between one group of three species (C. kaikoi, C. phaseoliformis and C. fausta) and the remaining species. This clustering corresponds to the two previously described subgenera within the genus Calyptogena (Calyptogean and Ectenagena) with the exception of the placement of C. nautilei, which had been placed in the subgenus Ectenagena. Genetic distances between two haplotypes of C. soyoae were 0.043 for the COI region and 0.055 for the COIII region, and three amino acid substitutions were detected with the COIII region. Calyptogena sp. from the Iheya Ridge could be distinguished from one of the two haplotypes (type A) of C. soyoae by only a single nucleotide substitution, a result that suggests that Calyptogena sp. of the Iheya Ridge diverged from C. soyoae after the two haplotypes had diverged, and it is now isolated from C. soyoae in Sagami Bay.

    Notes: Abstract The phylogenetic relationships among local populations of undescribed vestimentiferan species that belong to the genera Lamellibrachia and Escarpia and had been collected at six sites around Japan were analyzed on the basis of the partial (1023 bp) nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial gene for cytochrome oxidase I (COI), using a pogonophoran and a polychaete as outgroups. The identical amino acid sequence was deduced from the nucleotide sequence obtained from each of the vestimentiferans analyzed. The strong similarity among deduced amino acid sequences of COI suggested a close relationship between vestimentiferans and pogonophorans. On the basis of the phylogenetic relationships, the analyzed vestimentiferan populations were classified tentatively as five species. The genetic differentiation of vestimentiferans was suggested to occur bathymetrically as well as being a consequence of horizontal segregation. Two of these tentatively identified species inhabit both a hydrothermal area and a cold seep area, as is the case for some species of bivalves that belong to the genera Bathymodiolus and Calyptogena.

    Notes: Abstract Homogenization temperature and salinity were determined for fluid inclusions in mostly quartz and partly sphalerite, cassiterite, and barite from the 28 tin-polymetallic ore deposits in Bolivia. Generally, the homogenization temperatures and salinities of these fluid inclusions are comparatively high for ore deposits formed by cassiterite mineralization, such as Morococala and Avicaya in the Oruro district, frequently indicating a temperature higher than 300°C and salinity higher than 20 equiv. wt% NaCl. Particularly, it is quite possible that tin deposits associated with the W-Bi and tourmaline mineralizations such as Viloco and Caracoles have been produced by such high-temperature hypersaline fluid ranging up to 500°C and 56 equiv. wt% NaCl, similar to the porphyry copper type. This feature reveals that the hydrothermal fluid related to the Sn-W-Bi mineralization may be of magmatic origin. Homogenization temperatures for the Pb-Zn deposits with no tin minerals are low, mostly ranging 170°–300°C. At the Avicaya-Bolivar mining area in the Oruro district as well as at the Tasna and Chocaya-Animas mining areas in the Quechisla district temperature gradients consistent with the zonal distributions of ore minerals were confirmed.

    Notes: Abstract A quantitative evaluation of the solubility of uraninite (UO2) in aqueous solutions under hydrothermal conditions was made using previously reported thermodynamic data, so as to inquire into the controlling factors for Canadian unconformity-type ore mineralization as observed in the Athabasca uranium field. The results of solubility calculations suggest that uranyl carbonate complexes, such as UO2CO 3 o , UO2(CO3) 2 2- and UO2(CO3) 3 4- , predominate under relatively oxidizing and slightly acidic-alkaline conditions and that the uranyl chloride complex, UO2Cl+ is dominant under acidic conditions. These features are predicted at temperatures up to 200 °C over reasonable ranges of CO2 pressure (Pco2) and salinity. Consequently, the physico-chemical parameters, such as oxygen activity (ao2), and pH are regarded as the most important factors controlling uraninite solubility. Judging from the paragenetic sequences observed in most unconformity-type uranium deposits in the Athabasca district, appreciable decreases in the above variables are postulated to have occurred in the stage of principal uranium deposition. Such changes would be due to fluid-mixing phenomenon accompanied by the ‘diagenetic-hydrothermal’ activity (Hoeve and Quirt 1987).

    Notes: Abstract To determine the bulk chemical compositions of chalcopyrite containing starlike sphalerite and sphalerite including dotlike chalcopyrite, specimens from various types of ore deposits in Japan were used for modal and electron microprobe analyses. According to the analytical results, most of the measured zinc contents in chalcopyrite containing starlike sphalerite are less than 0.8 at%, corresponding to the maximum solubility of zinc in chalcopyrite as determined experimentally at 400°C. However, specimens from the Maruyama deposit in the Tsumo mine contain 1.2–1.4 at% Zn, which are within the solubility limit of an intermediate solid solution (ISS) above 400°C. It is therefore concluded that starlike sphalerite in chalcopyrite are exsolution products derived from primary chalcopyrite solid solution and/or zincic ISS. Measured copper contents in sphalerite including dotlike chalcopyrite yield considerably higher values, i.e., 1.5–6.0 at%, which exceed the solubility limits of copper in sphalerite solid solution as determined experimentally. This result suggests that not all the chalcopyrite dots were exsolved from sphalerite, but that most of them are the product of some other mechanisms.

    Notes: Glasses with a composition xLi2O⋅(1−x)B2O3 were investigated by low-frequency Raman scattering in the composition range x=0–0.28. The evolution of the quasielastic line, the boson peak, the Debye frequency, and some other glass parameters with the composition was analyzed. The frequency of the boson peak ωb shifts with changing x by a factor of 3 and the width of the quasielastic spectrum at room temperature is always equal to ∼0.24ωb. The Grüneisen parameter of the glasses is estimated on the basis of the light scattering data for the boson peak frequency within the frames of the anharmonic model of the fast relaxation and using the sound velocity data—for the Debye frequency. The anharmonic properties are compared with the fragility of these glassformers; it is shown that the fragility increases with anharmonicity. It is shown also that the width of the glass transition region correlates with the anharmonic properties. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
