Notes: Abstract Hydride generation AAS was applied for the determination of total selenium in soil. The influence of various anions and cations present in the sample solution on the generation of selenium hydride was investigated. Special attention was paid to the wet oxidation procedure for the sample dissolution. The proposed procedure involves microwave sample preparation by using a mixture of H2O2/HNO3/H2SO4. The accuracy of the procedure was checked by the analysis of the standard reference material Buffalo River Sediment (SRM-2704, NIST). Satisfactory agreement of the results obtained with the values reported was achieved. The detection limit of the procedure was 25 ng Se/g of soil. The relative standard deviation of the measurements varied from 5.5% for SRM-2704 up to 10% for the real soil samples.

Notes: Abstract Directional gamma-gamma correlations of the strong 208.4–112.9 keV and of the weak 71.6–249.7 keV cascade transitions in the decay of177gLu have been measured. The correlation coefficientsA 22=−0.208±0.012 of the strong andA 22=−0.105±0.005 of the weak cascade have been determined. The mixing ratioE2/M1 of −3.7±0.3 for the 112.9 keV transition and theM2/E1 of −0.0173±0.0065 for the 71.6 keV transition have been obtained. The deducedM2 admixture in the 71.6 keV transition is in good agreement with the theoretical estimates of Weisskopf and of Nilsson.

Notes: Abstract Plant samples (Plantago lanceolata – narrow leaf plantain and Cichorium endiviae – endive) were collected in the surroundings of heavy metal emission sources and in other less contaminated areas. After digestion in a closed microwave system using HNO3, the concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn were determined using ICP-AES. Detection limits for all the elements of interest are given. Differences in heavy metal uptake rate between both plant species were observed. The uptake is more intensive for endive than for narrow leaf plantain. High concentrations of some heavy metals were determined in the unwashed plant samples as a result of exposure to aerosols. Tukey’s statistical test was used to confirm the discrepancy of Cr concentration in plant samples from various areas. Washing the leaves with water was found to remove a large amount of water-soluble aerosols.
