Notes: Summary The behaviour of lignin-polysaccharide complex of spruce wood in soda pulping was studied by the characterization of lignin-saccharide fractions isolated from a series of soda pulps. The dioxane pulp lignins contain 8–14% of carbohydrates in which glucose was the predominant component. Its content increased with increasing degree of delignification indicating the formation of secondary lignin-carbohydrate linkage. Both glycosidic and ether type of bond between residual lignin and cellulose in pulp was proved by methylation analysis of the pulp dioxane lignin.

Notes: Summary Acidolysis of spruce wood (Picea abies) corresponded to a pseudo-first order reaction mechanism. While anhydrous methanolis a better medium for wood acidolysis than anhydrous dioxane, after addition of 10% water dioxane became about twice as effective as methanol. The results are discussed in terms of acidity functions (H), solubility parameters and condensation effects. Infrared spectra of dioxane lignins showed a similar re-arrangement of side chain carboxyl groups from α to β position, as was observed previously during acidolysis in methanol.

Notes: Summary 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize the structural changes of cell wall polymers in beech wood Fagus sylvatica during drying processes. The analysis of five wood samples, namely, untreated, untreated dried, pre-treated by steam and/or NaOH subjected to drying showed partial depolymerization of lignin component as well as the change of the ratio of the crystalline and of the amorphous parts of cellulose as the consequence of wood pre-treatment. In addition, T1ρ(1H) relaxation times were determined in beech wood sample pre-treated with steam at 135 °C and the lignin isolated from this sample. The magnitudes of the relaxation times were found comparable in both samples as well as in the lignin-cellulose model compound. These unique T1ρ (1H) values indicate that spin diffusion is complete and homogeneous due to spatial proximity of spins and confirmed the formation of lignin-cellulose complex during thermal treatment of wood.

Notes: To elucidate the effect of lignin addition, polypropylene films containing 2-10 wt % of spruce organosolv lignin and/or beech wood prehydrolysis lignin were compared with lignin-free polymers with respect to tensile strength and elongation before and after aging. The physicochemical properties of the lignin-containing films were investigated by conductivity measurements, surface behavior, and UV and IR spectroscopy. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
