    Notes: In this paper, a number of the methods of nonlinear dynamics are applied to the study of electrostatic turbulence in a magnetized, steady-state, partially ionized plasma. Electrostatic potential fluctuations were obtained by using a capacitative probe. These signals were captured, digitized, and recorded with a LeCroy transient recorder system interfaced to an IBM-AT personal computer. A commercially available software program was used to calculate power spectra, to reconstruct and plot phase portraits, take Poincaré sections, compute correlation dimensions and Lyapunov exponents, and to perform other manipulations of the time series of electrostatic potential fluctuations obtained from the plasma. Evidence of low-dimensional chaos was sought, and trends were investigated which related the state of the turbulence to such plasma parameters as the anode voltage (rms electrostatic potential), background gas pressure (collisionality), and magnetic induction. These variables were found to have a significant effect on the nonlinear dynamics of the plasma.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces a simple stochastic model for waterfowl movement. After outlining the properties of the model, we focus on parameter estimation. We compare three standard least squares estimation procedures with maximum likelihood (ML) estimates using Monte Carlo simulations. For our model, little is gained by incorporating information about the covariance structure of the process into least squares estimation. In fact, misspecifying the covariance produces worse estimates than ignoring heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. We also develop a modified least squares procedure that performs as well as ML. We then apply the five estimators to field data and show that differences in the statistical properties of the estimators can greatly affect our interpretation of the data. We conclude by highlighting the effects of density on per capita movement rates.

    Notes: Abstract The forced double-Monod model (for a chemostat with a predator, a prey and periodically forced inflowing substrate) displays quasiperiodicity, phase locking, period doubling and chaotic dynamics. Stroboscopic sections reveal circle maps for the quasiperiodic regimes and noninvertible maps of the interval for the chaotic regimes. Criticality in the circle maps sets the stage for chaos in the model. This criticality may arise with an increase in the period or amplitude of forcing.

    Notes: Abstract Integrodifference equations are discrete-time models that possess many of the attributes of continuous-time reaction-diffusion equations. They arise naturally in population biology as models for organisms with discrete nonoverlapping generations and well-defined growth and dispersal stages. I examined the varied travelling waves that arise in some simple ecologically-interesting integrodifference equations. For a scalar equation with compensatory growth, I observed only simple travelling waves. For carefully chosen redistribution kernels, one may derive the speed and approximate the shape of the observed waveforms. A model with overcompensation exhibited flip bifurcations and travelling cycles in addition to simple travelling waves. Finally, a simple predator-prey system possessed periodic wave trains and a variety of travelling waves.
