Notizen: A body-fitted curvilinear co-ordinate system is used to solve the equations of two-dimensional incompressible laminar flow over bluff obstructions by finite differences. Arbitrary conditions at the corner are removed by this method. Results for a backward-facing step are in reasonable agreement with those obtained with conventional mesh systems, and the differences are explained. A treatment of a channel expansion, in comparison with empirical data, is also included. The capability of the present method to handle arbitrary two-dimensional geometries is stressed and demonstrated, using a triangle and a semi-circle as examples.

Notizen: The stability of plane Poiseuille flow and circular Couette flow are examined with respect to linear azimuthally periodic disturbances by the finite element method. In the case of Couette motion, solutions are obtained for a narrow gap, a wide gap and a dilute polymer solution with an elongational viscosity in the narrow gap limit when both cylinders rotate at almost equal speed in the same direction. Results are in good agreement with previous calculations by other numerical methods.

Notizen: Multigrid method is used to accelerate the convergence of the numerical solution of the set of partial differential equations for generating the Body-Fitted Co-ordinate system (BFC) for both simply and doubly connected domain problems. The multigrid method is based on the full approximation scheme with bilinear interpolation as prolongation operator. The other components of the multigrid method such as the relaxation method, restriction operator, number of relaxation sweeps per cycle and direction of relaxation sweeps are varied with a view to obtaining the general principle in implementing an efficient multigrid algorithm for the generation of the BFCs.
