Notizen: Abstract This paper demonstrates that it is possible to calculate the complete set of elastic mechanical properties for graphite-epoxy fiber-reinforced materials at any fiber-volume fraction by modifying equations previously developed to include transversely isotropic graphite-fiber properties. Experimental verification of the modified equations is demonstrated by using these equations to curve fit elastic-property data obtained ultrasonically over a range of fiber-volume fractions. Material systems under consideration are T300/5208, AS-3501 and Modomor II/LY558 graphite epoxy. Using the modified equations it is possible to extrapolate for fiber properties. From Modomor II/LY558 ultrasonic data, it is shown that five out of seven extrapolated graphite-fiber properties are consistent with the assumption that graphite fibers are transversely isotropic. Elastic properties for T300/5208 and AS-3501 are ultrasonically evaluated by propagating stress waves through six individual specimens but at various angles from a block of unidirectional material. Particular attention is devoted to specimen dimensions. To demonstrate the need for accurately calculating or experimentally measuring all lamina elastic properties, a brief discussion is included on the effect that variations in lamina elastic properties have on calculating interlaminar stresses.

Notizen: Abstract A modified version of the Kachanov damage accumulation law is employed to study the damage kinetics in laminated composite materials such as epoxy/graphite laminates. The primary objective of the present work is to quantify the characteristic events involved in the final stages of the failure process in composite materials following occurrence of the CDS. The process of localization and spread of damage ahead of the dominant matrix crack is viewed as a sequence of nucleation and propagation phases both of which may be described by use of the internal damage parameter. This scalar quantity reflects the ratio of the current crack (or pore) density to its saturation, or critical level. It is shown that the Continuous Damage Mechanics (CDM) approach is useful in modeling a damage field consisting mainly of the fiber breaks generated ahead of the matrix crack and clustered around the plane of a prospective fracture, thus forming the so-called “damage band” embedded within the stress field of the dominant crack. Description of this type of damage applies to the failure process which follows formation of the “characteristic damage state” (CDS) observed in a number of multiphase materials.

Notizen: An enriched finite element model for linear elastic fracture mechanics is developed for a mixed variational statement. The independent approximations for the displacement and stress components are enriched by adding the near-field analytic expressions for a cracked body to the polynomial approximations of a conventional element. This allows for an accurate representation of the stress and displacement fields near the crack tip and also results in the direct calculation of the appropriate stress intensity factors. The accuracy of this formulation is demonstrated through several numerical examples.
