Notes: During one year 4398 injured athletes were treated at the casualty wards of Aarhus, Denmark; 156 were practicing track and field disciplines. In the same period 54 track athletes of a Danish sport club were followed in order to register any lesion incurred during sports activity. Thirty-one athletes (57%) had 35 injuries, giving an injury incidence of 1.8 per 1000 hours of practice. At follow-up after 1 year, 13% of all athletes still had complaints, and none of them had returned to former sports activity. Jumpers had overuse symptoms correlated to take-off, and sprains or fractures related to downstrokes. Runners had a higher risk of overuse injuries than jumpers, especially involving the Achilles tendon and the plantar aponeurosis. Young athletes had a higher injury incidence per time than older participants; and women had higher injury risk than men.

Notes: [Auszug] Under the rubric of “cross-flow filtration,” dynamic filtration techniques have been proposed, and used, for knotty solid-liquid separation problems—especially those involving such microbial suspensions as fermentation broths and cell homoge-nates1,2,3. The results, however, are ...

Notes: Summary In an urban population of a quarter of a million, all shoulder dislocations that occurred in a 5-year period were recorded. A total of 216 shoulder dislocations were seen, 53.3% in men. The overall incidence rate was 17/100000 per year. Incidence peaks were found in the age-group 21–30 years among men and in the age-group 61–80 years among women. Significantly more patients in the older age groups, and especially women, dislocated at home by falling on an outstretched arm, whereas the younger age-groups most frequently dislocated outside the home, e.g., on sports fields. A considerable number of patients (18.6%) were hospitalized, and 85.5% of the patients required outpatient follow-up. Prophylactic measures should be taken especially to increase the safety of the elderly in their homes.

Notes: Summary Sevenhundred and thirty proximal humeral fractures, taken from a 5-year period, were entered in this study. We found a higher total incidence rate than that previously seen: 73/100000 population. Twenty-nine percent of the patients required hospitalization; 75% of these were over 60 years old. Only 21% of these were operated on, the majority of admissions being for social reasons. A total of 583 bed-days were used each year in the Aarhus City area (250000 inhabitants). The majority of fractures resulted from falls on level ground. The elderly fell at home, while the younger people fell in public areas. Traffic accidents and work accidents were seldom seen. The accidents occurred typically around midday and before midnight, and mostly in December and January. Half of the fractures were two-part fractures of the surgical neck, while fractures of the greater tubercle and threepart fractures accounted for 21% and 17%, respectively. Based on current developments in the population average life span, it can be expected that proximal fractures will increase the hospital workload significantly in the future.

Notes: Summary Hemangiomas rarely involve joints and less than 100 synovial hemangiomas have been reported. A case of a localised, intermediate type of venous angioma in the kneejoint causing severe knee pain is reported here, and the characteristic features are discussed. Arthroscopy is suggested as a valuable diagnostic procedure in finding and examining such tumors.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of reducing the incidence of injuries in long-distance runners was investigated in 41 recreational long-distance runners. They were divided into two matched groups according to age, sex, weight, height, experience, training and incidence of injury during the previous year. The runners in the study group were clinically investigated before the season started, and individual training programmes were drawn up. The other group served as controls. The runners receiving prevention and training programmes improved in training technique and had increased training mileage, race participation and racing mileage. In 1 year a total of 50 injuries were recorded, 29 in the study group and 21 in the controls. The injury incidence per 1000 hours of competition was significantly lower in the study group with a preventive training regimen than in the controls (30.7 versus 62.5).

Notes: Summary Binding capacities for purified malate dehydrogenase from pig heart and malate dehydrogenase from Escherichia coli were determined for different gel matrices and a Cibacron Blue modified membrane. During batch adsorption the membrane has nearly the same capacity as Blue Sepharose. During filtration the effective capacity of the membrane was increased in contrast to Blue Sepharose. With cell homogenates, when used under cross-flow conditions, the membrane displayed better performance than Blue Sepharose.
