    Notes: Abstract Measurements of charge separation in rock during stable and unstable deformation give unexpectedly large decay times of 50 sec. Time-domain induced polarization experiments on wet and dry rocks give similar decay times and suggest that the same decay mechanisms operate in the induced polarization response as in the relaxation of charge generated by mechanical deformation. These large decay times are attributed to electrochemical processes in the rocks, and they require low-frequency relative permittivity to be very large, in excess of 105. One consequence of large permittivity, and therefore long decay times, is that a significant portion of any electrical charge generated during an earthquake can persist for tens or hundreds of seconds. As a result, electrical disturbances associated with earthquakes should be observable for these lengths of time rather than for the milliseconds previously suggested.

    Notes: Abstract An investigation is made of electric fields induced in natural dielectrics by mechanical loading and electrical polarization. It is shown that the relaxation of the polarization is identical in nature for both cases and is basically a thermally activated process. The temperature dependence is obtained for the relaxation time of the electric fields. Also estimated is the activation energy for motion of charge carriers leading to the relaxation of these fields.

    Notes: Abstract Small-angle x-ray scattering has been used to investigate the formation of embryonic submicroscopic cracks in polymers under a load. The main characteristics of crack formation in various loading regimes are analyzed. It is shown that there is a relation between the submicrocrack concentration and the deformation of the loaded polymer. The principal parameters of crack formation determining the strength properties of the polymer are found to be the transverse dimension of the initial submicrocracks relative to the loading axis, which is determined by the structural heterogeneity of the material, and the submicrocrack concentration in the prefracture state. The principles of the micromechanics of polymer fracture are formulated on the basis of the results of an analysis of the quantitative relationship between these parameters. The dominant role of the surface in the fracture process is demonstrated by comparing the parameters of crack formation in the interior and at the surface of the loaded polymer.

    Notes: Abstract The experimental work on embryonic fracture cracks in polymers recently carried out in the A. F. Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, is reviewed. The cracks have been studied by diffraction methods, chiefly by small-angle x-ray scattering. A principal result of this research is the possibility of formulating the general principle of a micromechanics of polymer fracture. The theory is based on data on the behavior of submicrocracks in polymers (size, concentration), the structural conditions and molecular mechanism of crack formation, the enlargement of submicrocracks, their influence on microcrack formation, and the growth of the macrocracks.

    Notes: Abstract Hydrostatic pressure results in decrease in the creep rate of a polymer loaded by tensile stress. The decrease in the creep rate is associated with the increase in intermolecular interaction. The correlation found between the creep rate of material loaded by a constant tensile force and with change in the melting temperature of a polymer under pressure appears to be commensurate with change in intermolecular interaction.

    Notes: Abstract The electron-microscopic method was used to study the structure of unsaturated polyester films. The initial submicrocracks developing in the loaded films were studies by the low-angle x-ray diffraction method. It is shown that for these polymers a typical feature is the globular structure with a globule diameter of 103–3·103 Å, and the transverse dimension of the submicrocracks developing under the action of a load practically coincides with the globule diameter.
