    Notes: Summary The diagnosis of aspergillosis in the paranasal sinuses is preoperatively difficult to make in spite of the increasing number of reports showing its prevalence. However, because symptoms are usually non-diagnostic and infection is usually confined to a single sinus, X-ray findings are often suspect for possible neoplasm. We have studied six patients with aspergillosis, all of whom were suspected of having sinus tumors, but were otherwise healthy persons. Affected sinuses were examined by CT and the diagnosis of non-invasive aspergillosis was confirmed by operation. In this report, we have compared the CT and X-ray findings in our cases of aspergillosis. These findings indicate that CT is useful in the preoperative diagnosis of sinus aspergillosis.

    Notes: Summary Lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK) are able to kill natural killer (NK)-resistant fresh bioptic tumor cells. We have tried to increase the antitumor activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes by the simultaneous stimulation with interleukin-2 and autologous tumor extract (TE). The influence of LAK cells and LAK cells stimulated with TE was compared in the subrenal capsule assay in nude mice. Experiments were performed with eight head and neck tumors following their surgical extirpation. The tumors were first grown in the renal capsule space while lymphocytes were being stimulated in vitro. Following this, the lymphocytes were injected into the growing tumors. The autologous TE-stimulated LAK cells were more effective in treating tumors than were the LAK cells. Tumors regressed in some cases so treated, a finding which was never observed with LAK cells alone.

    Notes: Summary Experience with antibody-dependent, cellmediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) has shown that antibody can increase the localization and killing capacity of lymphocytes. We tested the possibility of improving the activity of lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK) on human tumor using the subrenal capsule assay in nude mice. The tumors were first grown in the renal capsule space and the effector cells injected later. In the model experiment we used M21 melanoma and monoclonal antibody against melanoma-associated antigen GD3. This antibody increases the tumor inhibitory activity of LAK cells from healthy donors in comparison to LAK alone. We have been able to prove the clinical relevance of such an approach. Tumor bioptic material from five tumor patients was tested with various monoclonal antibodies, following which the highly reactive antibodies were selected and incubated with the patient's LAK cells. Such pretreated LAK cells have a high growth-inhibitory effect on autologous tumor growing in the renal capsule space of the test mice.

    Notes: Summary We demonstrated the enhancement of HLA-DR antigen expression on cultured laryngeal carcinoma cells (Hep 2) by in vitro cultivation with LAK cells using flow cytometric and immunohistological analysis. For in vitro cultivation of tumor cells with LAK cells, we used newly developed experimental systems (the Transwell double-dish system and experimental three-dimensional tumors). In flow cytometric analysis, expression of HLA-DR antigen on tumor cells was compared before and after co-cultivation with LAK cells. When tumor cells were cultured separately with LAK cells in a Transwell Petri dish and the expression of HLA-DR antigen on tumor cells was analyzed by flow cytometry, the expression of HLA-DR antigen on tumor cells was increased in a dose-dependent manner related to the number of LAK cells used. Furthermore, when anti-interferon-γ monoclonal antibody was added to the experimental system, enhancement of HLA-DR antigen expression was blocked. These findings were consistent with immunohistological studies, in which experimental three-dimensional Hep 2 cell tumors were established in double-layered agar with/without being co-cultivated with LAK cells. The expression of HLA-DR antigen in this system was significantly increased when compared to such expression before cultivation with LAK cells. These findings suggested that the culture systems employed in this study could be a possible model for examining solid tumor in vivo biological responses. This enhanced expression of HLA-DR antigen may also represent one of the multifactorial responses seen with adoptive LAK cell immunotherapy for solid tumors.

    Notes: Abstract Barium ferrite fine particles were prepared from aqueous suspensions containing goethite (α-FeOOH) and barium hydroxide by a hydrothermal method. Barium ferrite particles of thin hexagonal plate shape could be produced from commercially available goethite with an Fe: Ba molar ratio of 7.2, whereas barium ferrite particles could be produced from synthesized goethite with a molar ratio of unity. The effects on the size of hexagonal platelike particles of such reaction conditions as temperature, stirring speed and alkali concentration were investigated. Particles of 0.6 to 0.8 μm mean size were prepared under the reaction conditions covered here.

    Notes: Abstract Barium titanate fine particles of cubic system were synthesized hydrothermally from aqueous barium hydroxide solutions with fine particles of either amorphous or crystalline (rutile) titania in suspension. The mean size of barium titanate particles prepared from amorphous titania ranged from 0.03 μm to 0.11 μm, depending on hydrothermal conditions. The particle size approximately agreed with the crystallite size (0.04–0.09 μm). On the other hand, the mean size of barium titanate particles prepared from rutile titania ranged from 0.2 to 0.7 μm, which was about six times as large as the crystallite size. The difference of sizes of barium titanate particles prepared might be ascribed to the difference in dissolution rates of amorphous or crystalline titania particles.

    Notes: Abstract Barium titanate ultrafine particles were synthesized from amorphous titania by a hydrothermal method. The mean size of the barium titanate particles prepared at a hydrothermal treatment time of 4 h, was nearly equal to 0.04 5 μm in the range of barium-to-titanium molar ratio (BT) ⩾ 2, and approximately agreed well with the crystallite size. At a BT molar ratio of 1.0, the mean particle size increased to 0.2 μm, while the crystallite size remained constant at 0.045 μm. When the particle size ranged from 0.12–0.20 μm, prepared for the BT molar ratio of 1.0–1.4, the specific dielectric constant for a sintered disc composed of these particles attained a value of 5000 or more. As the BT molar ratio increased to exceed 1.5, when the mean particle size decreased from 0.13 μm to 0.045 μm, the specific dielectric constant for the sintered disc was decreased greatly. The specific dielectric constant for the sintered disc can be correlated well with the size of the composing particles.

    Notes: The kinetics of the reaction of carbon dioxide with mono- and diethanolamine in such nonaqueous solvents as methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol and in water were studied using a stirred tank absorber with a plane gas-liquid interface at 303 K. The reaction was found to be of first order with respect to carbon dioxide for every solvent. The order of reaction with respect to ethanolamine was found to be unity only for an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine and for the other solutions, ranged from 1.4 to 2, depending on the solvent species. The reaction order was increased in the order of water, methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol. The variation of the reaction order with the solvent species could be explained in terms of a reaction scheme via a zwitterion. Almost linear dependence of the logarithm of the reaction rate constant on the solubility parameter of the solvent was derived.

    Notes: The absorption of dilute SO2 into aqueous double slurries containing CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2 was carried out using a stirred tank with a plane gas-liquid interface. The absorption rate increased and finally reached that under the completely gas-film controlled conditions as the absorption process proceeded. The desulfurization process using the double slurry was formulated by a two-reaction-plane model in which there are no particles suspended in-between the interface and the primary reaction plane. It was suggested from comparison of the experimental absorption rates with the theoretical predictions that 40 to 60% of the absorbed sulfur dioxide may be present as an effective magnesium sulfite ion pair.
