Notes: Summary The argentea of thePoecilia reticulata eye is divided into a black-iridescent dorsal and a silvery-iridescent ventral region. An opaque black patch lies on the dorso-ventral meridian passing through the optic nerve. The structure and ultrastructure of the various layers of the argentea and sciera are described. Three types of crystals occurring in the iridophores of the argentea have been found. The possible functional significance of the regional structural differences of argentea and sciera are discussed.

Notes: Summary The first haemopoietic centres in the embryo ofPterophyllum scalare are found in the blood islands of the yolk sac. These results are in contrast to the classical theory of blood formation in teleosts, which maintains that the first blood formation occurs intraembryonically, in the so-called intermediate cell mass of Oellacher. InPterophyllum, the intermediate cell mass forms only the axial blood vessels. Haemopoiesis in the post-embryo is carried out by the pronephros. This organ remains haemopoietic to the adult stage. In the adult, the pronephric tubules are degenerated; the organ is filled with haemopoietic tissue and also contains strands of adrenal tissue. The adult kidney (mesonephros) is also haemopoietic, though to a much lesser degree than the pronephros. The blood islands in the yolk sac form only stem cells (haemocytoblasts) and proerythroblasts. Released into the circulation, they differentiate and mature into round, disc-like erythrocytes (erythrocytes-E). Erythropoiesis in the pronephros produces elliptical erythrocytes (erythrocytes-ImA). Thus for the latter part of the postembryonic phase, until complete absorption of the yolk, there is a mixed erythrocyte population in circulation. During metamorphosis into the laterally-compressed adult, the adult type of erythrocyte (erythrocyte-A) makes its first appearance. Leucocytes and thrombocytes appear much later in development than the red blood cells. They are formed in the pronephros and are seen in circulation only after the yolk has been absorbed.

Notes: Summary The vast majority of ‘oil-droplets’ in the dark and light-adapted retinal twin-cones ofPoecilia reticulata is of the ‘matrix-type’. In bright light (day light+overhead strip light) there occurs in some regions a very pronounced numerical change from ‘matrix’ to ‘cristate-type’, whereas other regions remain unaffected. The functional significance of these differences is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. Two isozymes of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) are present in the tissues of the frogRana temporaria. The slow moving one (II) is abundant in adult skeletal muscle and lesser quantities are found in heart, brain and liver. The fast moving band (I) is predominant in heart muscle, liver and brain. 2. The adult ovary, unfertilized eggs, fertilized eggs and embryos at the 2 cell, 4 cell and gastrula stages show both bands but band II gradually gets fainter and disappears. From the tail bud stage until the tadpoles get their hind legs, only band I is present; the reappearance of II is due to synthesis of this isozyme in the liver during the late tadpole stage. Leg muscles at this stage show only band I. Immediately after metamorphosis however II appears in abundance in the leg muscles, and isozyme I declines relatively. 3. Various attempts were made to induce the early appearance of isozyme II during the tadpole stage. Low oxygen, a variety of foods, thyroid hormone and minced ovaries had no effect. 4. Rearing fertilized eggs to the tadpole stage at 12° and 20° C produced no marked difference in the isozymes of LDH. Denervation of the adult gastrocnemius muscle for 8 weeks had no influence on leg muscle LDH isozymes. Regenerated tadpole tail showed the same pattern as the normal tadpole tail. 5. It is concluded that the synthesis of the LDH isozymes is under very close genetic control. 6. Malic dehydrogenase seems to be a homogeneous enzyme in the frog and shows no isozyme varieties.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of the accessory outer segment (AOS) — a ciliumlike structure emanating from the inner segment and running alongside the outer segment of photoreceptors — is described. The AOS occurs in both rods and cones of Poecilia reticulata. Its ultrastructure, including the arrangement of microtubules, which originate from the ciliary stalk, is the same in rods and cones. The cone-AOS is connected with the outer segment by a thin plasmabridge, whereas the rod-AOS lies embedded within the outer segment. The outer segment of the cone, in contrast to that of the rod, is separated from the pigment epithelium by a large extracellular space. An intimate contact, however, is secured by the AOS; its membrane is closely appositioned to the pigment epithelium membrane. The functional significance of the AOS and its possible occurrence in other vertebrate classes, are discussed.
