    Notes: With better than 1% control of alloy composition, binary alloy films CoxNi1−x/Cu(100) with x≤10% were prepared for the study of the spin-reorientation transition at variations of composition, thickness, and temperature. Only the films with a Co concentration less than 10% reveal the spin-reorientation with the film thickness. The critical thickness for the spin-reorientation transition was shifted drastically from 7.5 to 17.5 monolayers for a Co concentration variation from 0% to 8%. These findings indicate a strong influence of the composition on the magnetoelastic anisotropy. A kind of temperature-driven spin-reorientation from in-plane to perpendicular with increasing temperature was also found. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An improved model is proposed to deal with the magnetic bilayer systems taking into account the contribution of the anisotropy energy and biquadratic exchange coupling to elaborate on the evolution of the magnetoresistance (MR) ratio and magnetization process. The results indicate that the characteristic behavior of the MR ratio depends distinctly on both the biquadratic coupling constant and the layer thickness. The profile of the MR ratio was found to vary from an inverted bell shape to a concave pyramid with increasing biquadratic coupling strength, and decays sharply with the layer thickness. This model calculation helps us to provide a venue for further understanding the MR or giant magnetoresistance behavior of the magnetic multilayer system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic and structural properties were investigated for the 2 ML Co/Cu(100) films grown at various temperatures from 125 to 350 K. By precisely controlling the film thickness, the influence of thickness on Curie temperature (TC) due to the finite size effect can be excluded. The Curie temperature of the 2 ML Co keeps almost invariant for the growth temperature (Tg) below 250 K, and drops drastically at Tg higher than 275 K. For Tg=340 K, TC dropped to 170 K which is only about half of 325 K for Tg=125 K. Accompanied with the increase of TC for the films grown at lower temperatures, the remanent Kerr signal as well as coercivity were enhanced. According to a simple theoretical estimation, the change of TC due to the variation of the magnetization and anisotropy was found to be consistent with the experimental results. The enhancement in TC or magnetization and anisotropy with various Tg should be traced back to the presence of island growth in the films grown at lower temperatures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract This study was undertaken to characterize the epidemiology and clinical presentation of infection withChlamydia pneumoniae in a population composed primarily of middle-aged and older adults. Pharyngeal swabs and acute and convalescent phase sera were obtained from outpatients presenting with signs and symptoms of an acute respiratory infection. Sera were examined using the micro-immunofluorescence (MIF) test to detect antibody toChlamydia pneumoniae and complement fixation tests to detectMycoplasma pneumoniae, influenza A virus, influenza B virus, respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus. Pharyngeal swab specimens were cultured forChlamydia pneumoniae and tested forChlamydia pneumoniae by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 743 patients with a mean age of 40.5 ± 16.1 years were enrolled in the study. Twenty-one patients were serologically positive for acuteChlamydia pneumoniae infection in the MIF test. PCR was positive in 15 of the 20 serologically positive patients tested. AcuteChlamydia pneumoniae infection was identified in 3 % (2/76) of subjects with pneumonia, 5 % (12/247) of those with bronchitis, 5 % (3/61) of those with sinusitis only and 2 % (2/103) of those with pharyngitis only. Of the 21 patients withChlamydia pneumoniae infection, seven (mean age of 33 years) had an antibody pattern suggesting a primary infection while 14 (mean age of 54 years) had a reinfection pattern. Patients with reinfection had milder disease than those with primary infection. PCR testing in the current study confirms the previously proposed serologic criteria of acuteChlamydia pneumoniae infection.

    Notes: Abstract This article reviews current knowledge ofChlamydia pneumoniae strain TWAR, a newly recognizedChlamydia organism that causes acute respiratory infection, especially atypical pneumonia. Information is included on the microbiology, classification and laboratory diagnosis of the organism. Details of a series of studies of both endemic and epidemic respiratory infections are reviewed to present information on both the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of infection with strain TWAR. Laboratory studies of antibiotic sensitivity and recommendations for treatment are presented.

    Notes: Abstract A new framework for cartoon animation is proposed inthis work. By using the wavelet coefficients as the control points,one can manipulate curves so that shape metamorphosis occursalong resolutions as well as spatial locations. We model themotion of a cartoon character with the Lagrangian dynamic equationwhere the multiscale curve is driven by relevant forces. Thespatial and frequency localization property of the multiscalecurve model results in a sparse and diagonally dominant representationof the mass and stiffness matrices of the Lagrangian equationand hence the computation can be greatly simplified. To furthersimplify this model, we consider a model which consists of adecoupled system of ODEs. We then perform an experiment by capturingan image sequence with the locomotion of a walking dog, selectingsome key frames, and tracing the positions of limbs between thesekey frames. The best motion parameters are determined by usingthe least squares approximation. These extracted parameters arethen be used to animate cartoon characters of a similar typeof motion. The result shows the proposed curve descriptor withmultiscale structure and local control property is promisingin cartoon animation applications.

    Notes: Crystals of fractionated trans-1,4-polyisoprene (TPI) were grown from amyl acetate solution at two weight fractions, 5.7 × 10-4 and 0.011; for the lower concentration a precooling followed by heating and then crystallization at temperatures in the 10-32°C range was used, while for the higher concentration this method and direct crystallization at a temperature TC in the 0-32°C range were employed. The precooling method yielded samples crystallized in the α form, while direct crystallization led to formation of β-TPI at low TC and α at higher TC. The value for the DSC endotherm, characteristic of α-form melting, increased with increasing TC, with a shift to lower values with increasing concentration for precooled samples. A β to α transformation was found to occur for synthetic unfractionated TPI when swollen with amyl acetate at 35°C for 17h. Swelling in n-butyl acetate for one day at 25°C or 17 h at 35°C also led to this transformation. From experimental results 74°C is chosen as the temperature at which the α and β forms coexist in the bulk, and this is used to calculate the enthalpy of fusion of β-TPI, yielding a value of 8.6 kJ mol-1.
