    Notizen: Depth profiling of defect structures can be accomplished by taking advantage of the increased penetration of x rays with decreasing wavelength. Topographs can then be taken at various integrated depths giving a nondestructive profile of the microstructure. This is usually accomplished via a monochromator, which is a slow and expensive procedure, even at a synchrotron source. Appropriate filters can be used in white beam synchrotron topography which reduce fluorescence while at the same time giving a limited, though not monochromatic, bandpass. This allows observations of the microstructure over a narrow energy range, diminishing the complications arising from harmonics in interpreting white beam images. In studies of GaAs crystals it was found possible to use GaAs or Cu prefilters in conjunction with deliberate air attenuation of the long wavelength components of the synchrotron spectrum. Studies were made on GaAs crystals that had been processed in a variety of ways. Examples will be shown for GaAs substrates with low grown-in dislocation density and with Zn-doped GaAs epilayers. This selective energy filtering provides a simple, rapid method of recording reflections varying from approximately 0.2 to 1.6 A(ring). The combination of this technique with a precision goniometer tilt stage permitted observations of the specimen defect structure from a few microns below the surface to 0.3 mm depth, thus presenting a visual profile of the effect of processing on the defect structure of the sample.

    Notizen: The lattice distortion and crystal curvature in arsenic-implanted silicon wafers are investigated using a technique of double-crystal topography. In this study, a method for quantitative determination of the curvature of asymmetric crystal reflection planes as well as the concavity of specimens is demonstrated. Measurements of samples with different arsenic-implantation fluences indicate that all the crystal surfaces are convex and the radius of curvature decreases with increasing arsenic fluence. Effects of thermal annealing are shown to result in a reduction of the crystal curvature and local lattice distortion.

    Notizen: In recent years, with the advent of nearly perfect crystals, double-crystal topography has become very useful. For applications with such crystals the diffraction geometry in the double-crystal arrangement in three dimensions should be taken into account. Detailed studies of this problem are presented in this paper. Formulas for calculating the image height and displacement as the crystal is rotated are reported for various conditions. In the equispacing case, the image height is not limited provided the sample crystal is untilted with respect to the first crystal. However, if the crystal is tilted even a small amount then the image is limited and depends not only on the tilt angle φ but also on the distance between the X-ray source and the crystal L and on the degree of crystal perfection β. In general, the tilt angle should not exceed 1′ to obtain a large-area topograph and to measure the correct rocking curve in the asymmetric mode. In the unequispacing case, the image height is always limited. In this case, even when the crystal is not tilted, the image height is a function of L, φ and the difference in Bragg angle, Δθ, between the diffraction planes of the two crystals. The image height is directly proportional to β and inversely related to Δθ. In this case, in order to obtain a large-area topograph of a nearly perfect crystal L must be large or Δθ must be small. The different experimental conditions are explored for various types of first and second crystals to verify the analytical formulas that have been derived. The experimental data were found to be in good agreement qualitatively and quantitatively with the analysis.

    Notizen: Abstract The effects of phenol, cresol isomers, and chlorinated phenols on the respiration of activated sludges have been studied using Warburg techniques. The biodegradability of these materials under simulated treatment conditions in activated sludge was also determined. It was found that less than 10 mg/liter concentrations of phenol and chlorophenols, while being biodegraded, proved toxic to sludges unacclimated to phenolics. The toxic effects of the cresols were not so severe for the sludges tested. Phenolic analysis in these studies was accomplished employing GLC techniques with a new column packing, dinonylphthalate on Chromosorb G. This chromatographic technique was shown to be effective in rapidly identifying phenolic materials in activated sludge, treatment plant effluents, and industrial discharges: the separation of all isomers tested, exceptm- andp-chlorophenol, was possible using this technique.

    Notizen: Abstract The rearrangement and expression of six different mouse T-cell receptor TCRDV (Vδ) gene subfamilies have been studied in BALB/c mouse spleen. The results show that all the TCRDV gene segments studied can be rearranged and expressed with both the TCRA (α) and the TCRD (δ) chain. The apparently restricted and separated V gene repertoire for the TCRD and TCRAT-cell receptor may result from thymus and peripheral selection rather than from selective rearrangement in the DNA level. Several J gene segment show how much higher concentration in spleen with TCRDV gene segments, however, these J gen segments do not tend to be located at either end of the J gene cluster.
