Abstract The feasibility of a new mechanical testing technique is described. This technique allows the collection of load-relaxation type data at higher strain rates than is possible in a conventional load-relaxation test. This technique was used on commercial purity aluminium and 304 stainless steel at strain rates up to 5 sec−1. Good agreement with Hart's state variable model for plastic deformation was found.
