    Notes: We report an experimental study of the swirling flow generated in the gap between two coaxial corotating disks. We use a free geometry, i.e., unshrouded disks in air, with moderate to high Reynolds numbers. When the relative rotation rate is varied, transitions in the flow can be observed by global power measurement and are related to the geometry of the external recirculating flow. The mean flow is studied in details with hot-wire measurements using a boxcar-type averaging technique. It involves a single turbulent vortex undergoing a slow precession motion. We show that statistical properties of the turbulent fluctuations are affected by the dynamics of the mean flow, which also displays a correlation with the global power fluctuations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Background: A technique of fully thoracoscopic pulmonary lobectomy with rib-segment resection for specimen extraction is described, and preliminary results in 18 patients are presented. Methods: Surgery is performed through four 15-mm ports. For all lobes except one, the surgeon operates in front of the patient, where the rib spaces are widest and rib-space trauma is less. When lobar dissection is complete, specimen extraction is performed after resection of a rib segment proportional to tumor size. Muscle section is kept to a minimum. There is no rib retraction. Results: There were no deaths, three conversions to open surgery, and three major complications. Average postoperative stay was 5.4 days for patients without complications and 9.6 days for patients with complications. In total six patients presented with some degree of air leaks, and two had post-thoracotomy pain (〉2 month's duration). The literature is reviewed to analyze current techniques and to define parameters of a truly minimally invasive pulmonary lobectomy. Conclusions: This technique is safe and promising; however, thoracoscopic lobectomy still needs refining. Before valid randomized studies comparing thoracoscopic lobectomy and muscle-sparing thoracotomy or posterolateral thoracotomy can be credible, technical issues related to the production of a truly minimally invasive procedure should be resolved.

    Notes: Abstract: We present a study of sound propagation through a single vortex by direct numerical simulations (DNS) compared to experimental measurements. We analyse the amplitude and the phase shift of the sound wave when it interacts with the vortical flow and we display the focusing effects produced by the vortex. We show that the turbulent fluctuations have a little effect on the sound phase shift whereas they induce a strong defocusing effect on the sound amplitude.

    Notes: Abstract The D95°C value of Bacillus thuringiensis spores plated in the presence of lysozyme increased from 3.0 min to 3.6 min by post-treatment of heat-injured spores with 50mm EDTA. In the case of Bacillus alvei and Bacillus polymyxa spores D-values decreased from 4.9 to 4.3 min and from 4.7 to 4.1 min respectively. Post-treatment of heat-injured spores treated with alkaline thioglycollate increased D95°C values of Bacillus alvei from 4.2 to 5.3 min, B. thuringiensis 3.6 to 4.7 min, and Bacillus polymyxa from 4.2 to 5.0 min when spores were plated in the presence of lysozyme. Electron micrographs of heat-injured B. alvei spores treated with sodium thioglycollate indicated that the coat layers of the treated spores were granulated and less intact than the control spores.
