    Notes: Water collected at the Yport (eastern Normandy, France) Drinking Water Supply well, situated on a karst cavity, is affected by surface runoff-related turbidity spikes that occur mainly in winter. In order to forecast turbidity, precipitation was measured at the center of the catchment basin over two years, while water level and turbidity were monitored at the well site.Application of the approach of Box and Jenkins (1976) leads to a linear model that can accurately predict major floods about eight hours in advance, providing an estimate of turbidity variation on the basis of precipitation and water level variation over the previous 24 hours. However, this model is intrinsically unable to deal with (1) nonstationary changes in the time process caused by seasonal variations of in ground surface characteristics or tidal influence within the downstream part of the aquifer, and (2) nonlinear phenomena such as the threshold for the onset of runoff. This results in many false-positive signals of turbidity in summer.Here we present an alternative composite model combining a conceptual runoff submodel with a feedforward artificial neural network (ANN). This composite model allows us to deal with meaningful variables, the actioneffect of which on turbidity is complex, nonlinear, temporally variable and often poorly described. Predictions are markedly improved, i.e., the variance of the target variable explained by 12-hour forward predictions increases from 28% to 74% and summer inaccuracies are considerably lowered. The ANN can adjust itself to new hydrological conditions, provided that on-line learning is maintained.

    Notes: The diallylglycol carbonate monomer causes dermatitis due to irritation in the optical industry. Cutaneous intolerance may affect as many as 70% of the exposed persons employed.Almost all control subjects who where patch-tested showed irritation at a 2% concentration. The histological effects were an acute oedema with inflammation of the papillary dermis, and diapedesis of neutrophil polymorphonuclear leukocytes.Experiments on animals confirmed the irritant nature of the product; in the rabbit, a single application produced irritation, but to a lesser degree than in humans. Tests for possible sensitizing effects in the guinea pig have given negative results.Chemical analysis of the monomer revealed the presence of diallyi carbonate and acrolein. Allyl alcohol was detected in only one case.Patch tests were carried out in a group of control subjects with acrolein, diallyl carbonate and allyl alcohol. The histological appearance of the lesions caused by acrolein was quite different from that due to diallylglycol carbonate. It is probable that the irritant is the diallylglycol carbonate monomer itself.

    Notes: A new way of expressing the concentrations of patch test allergens solutions (or emulsions) is proposed. From these new expressions it can be seen that apparently similar concentrations (0.5 % chromium, 1 % formaldehyde) can actually be in the ratio 1 to 15 as expressed at the molecular level.

    Notes: “Eau de Javel” (liquid bleach) is a common cause of chromate contact allergy. A historical review explains the reasons for the addition of sodium dichromate after the First World War. The chromium content in different brands of eau de Javel has been determined by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicate that the chromium content is very low (0.03–3.65 mg/1) in French brands, whereas it is still important (7.06–82.9 mg/1) in Belgian brands; such an observation indicates that the almost complete removal of chromate in most brands of French eaux de Javel is a good example of prevention in the field of contact dermato-allergology.

    Notes: Gammaγ-irradiation affected (p≤0.05) the physicochemical properties of dry red kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris.) Protein deamidation, solubility and hydrophobicity increased and the number of sulfhydryl groups was reduced after irradiation. Irradiation also affected the outgrowth of natural mold contaminants. A dose of 1.5 kGy reduced the number of molds by 2 log cycles immediately after the treatment. However, incomplete inhibition was observed with the highest irradiation dose (3 kGy). Species of Aspergillus and Penicillium. were completely inhibited at 1.5 and 3 kGy respectively.

    Notes: : Gamma-irradiation and various edible coatings were tested on fresh strawberries (Fragaria spp.) for keeping fruit quality and extending shelf life. Four coatings based on milk protein were evaluated. In 1 experiment, coating formulation based on caseinate and/or strawberries were irradiated using a 60Co source. Both gamma-irradiation treatment and edible coating process significantly delayed (p ≤ 0.05) molds growth. Edible coating based on irradiated caseinate was more effective than that of unirradiated caseinate. In a 2nd experiment, 3 irradiated coatings based on calcium caseinate and whey proteins were evaluated. The coating formulation based on 1:1 caseinate-whey was found to be more effective than those based on calcium caseinate. Addition of calcium chloride or a mixture of pectin and agar increased the effectiveness of the coating by delaying molds' apparition.

    Notes: Color analysis on apple and potato slices coated with calcium caseinate or whey protein solutions showed that the 2 coatings efficiently delayed browning by acting as oxygen barriers. The antioxidant properties of the films were realized using a model allowing the release of oxidative species by electrolysis of saline buffer. Whey proteins were a better antioxidant capacity than calcium caseinate. Furthermore, addition of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to the formulations significantly improved their antioxidative power. Best scavenging of oxygen free radicals and reactive oxygen species was found for films based on whey proteins and CMC which inhibited by 75% the formation of colored compounds produced by the reaction of the oxidative species with N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine.

    Notes: Presents a physical model for determining the effective thermal conductivity of a two-phase composite medium with fixed or moving interfaces. A rigorous numerical method for removing oscillations in the thermal field is proposed. The methodology is based on the volume averaging technique with the assumption that the phases may coexist at a temperature different from that of fusion. The analysis reveals that the effective conductivity of a two-phase medium is dependent on the phase volume fractions, on their thermal conductivities and on a constitutive constant which determines the geometric structure of the medium and the nature of the interface (fixed or moving). The results for the one and two dimensional conduction-dominated phase change problem show that the oscillations produced by previous fixed-grid methods are eliminated.

    Notes: A numerical study is reported of melting from a horizontal heated wall with vertically oriented fins embedded in the phase change material. This work is motivated by the need to improve the heat transfer rates during the charge and discharge cycles in latent heat thermal energy storage systems. A computational methodology based on a fixed-grid enthalpy method is first presented for handling the complex problem of natural convection dominated melting from a finned wall. The model is validated with experimental data and next a parametric study is conducted to examine the effect of the heated wall (top or bottom), of the number of fins and of the Rayleigh number RaH on the melting process. Results show that melting is enhanced with a bottom finned heated wall and increasing Rayleigh number. They also indicate that, for a given Rayleigh number, the melting time is minimized for an optimal distance W between the fins. This optimal distance was correlated with W= a RaH + b for 2.10 × 106 = RaH = 8.57 × 106.
