    Notes: An overview is presented of the analytical approaches developed by our research group over the last ten years for analysis of alternative fuel, both biomass and fossil. The alternative fuels are analyzed successively by PLC-8 (preparative liquid chromatography-group-type) fractionation and high resolution gas chromatography. Some of the possibilities for fractionation and characterization of alternative fuels are herein exemplified with sugar cane bagasse pyrolysis products.

    Notes: n-Alkanes and fatty acid methyl esters have been chromatographed on four capillary columns of different polarity (LM-1 (100% polydimethylsiloxane), CB-225 (25% cyanopropyl, 25% phenyl polysiloxane), LM-100 (immobilized polyethylene glycol), and BPX-70 (70% cyanopropyl polysiloxane)) with the goal of identifying the major fatty acid methyl esters obtained by derivatization of vegetable oils. Chromatographic retention data were employed for the construction of a three-dimensional Kováts retention index system and for the elaboration of a table of equivalent chain length values.

    Notes: Toxicity evaluation of Dicofol to Astyanax bimaculatus schubarti, a characteristic fish species living in tropical rivers and lakes was carried out through LC50 - 96 Hours. These experiments were performed under laboratory controlled conditions with atmospheric air flow and dilution water at 25°C in the static mode, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) with pure CO2 and CO2 modified with hexane and methanol were used at 50, 70, 80, and 100°C and 300 atm. Several collection modes were studied to extract Dicofol from fish samples. The extraction efficiencies were directly comparedd with those obtained after 8 h of Soxhlet extraction using the same clean-up with Florisil and analysis by HRGC/ECD and HRGC/MS as a confirmatory analytical technique. The SFE recoveries at temperatures lower than 80°C were typically lower than soxhlet recoveries; however a temperature increase enhanced the efficiency of SFE. The results showed that under certain conditions, supercritical fluid gave higher extractio power (extracted 11 % more pesticide), shorter extraction time, and lower solvent consumption than Soxhlet, thus affording an excellent alternative to the conventional method for extracting Dicofol from fish sample.

    Notes: The effects of temperature and solvent density on the characteristics of the extracts obtained from supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of the volatile compounds from Brazilian rosemary (Rosamarinus officianalis L., Labiatae) using carbon dioxide (CO2) as solvent were investigated. The experiments were performed in a semi-batch laboratory scale home-made unit at two temperatures, viz. 310.15 and 320.15 K, over the pressure range of 100-160 bar. This study allowed to determine the crossover point and the maximum solubility of the oil. The products were analyzed by HRGC-MS, and compounds grouped in three different classes according to their molecular mass distribution in order to evaluate the influence of the variables studied on the characteristics of the extracts. The model proposed by Sovová was adopted in an attempt to interpret the mass transfer phenomena in the extraction process.

    Notes: The modified simplex algorithm proposed by Nelder and Mead has been used to optimize the separation by temperature programmed capillary GC, of volatile compounds present in alcoholic beverages. An adequate objective function, CRF, based on the separation factor of Kaiser has been used for the optimization process.A factorial design was initially performed to verify the relationship between the several parameters of interest. Following this, the optimization was executed and a surface adjusted within the set of experimental data.

    Notes: Determination of carbamate residues in tobacco samples was carried out by three different methods, two having been described in the literature and one developed for the purpose of this work. The extracts were analyzed by HRGC-FID (using derivatization), by HPLC-RP with photodiode array detection and by Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) with UV detection. The extraction method developed used in conjunction with capillary zone electrophoresis showed to be the most suitable for carbamate residue analysis in real tobacco samples. The developed method presented better recovery results in relation to the others. CZE allowed the determination of carbamate residue in real tobacco sample while HPLC and HRGC could not do this, due to co-elution problems.
