    Notes: Abstract An implementation of a radix-2 division unit is presented that uses prediction of the quotient digit. This prediction allows the concurrent computation of the quotient digit and the partial remainder. To achieve a simple quotient-digit selection, resulting in a step time roughly half of that of SRT division (without prediction), a simple estimate of the partial remainder is used, which requires that the divisor be scaled close to unity. This prescaling is simple to implement and increases the execution time by two cycles. We estimate a speed-up of 1.5 with respect to SRT division with redundant remainders.

    Notes: Abstract A very-high radix algorithm and implementation for CORDIC rotation in circular and hyperbolic coordinates is presented. The selection function consists of rounding the residual. It is shown that this assures convergence from the second iteration on. For the first iteration, the selection is done by table, using a lower radix than for the remaining iterations. The compensation of the variable scale factor is done by computing the logarithm of the scale factor and performing the compensation by an exponential. Estimations of the delay for 32-bit and 64-bit precision show a substantial speed up when compared to low radix implementations. The proposed algorithm is also compared with previously proposed very-high radix ones, and significant advantages are identified.

    Notes: Abstract The compensation of scale factor imposes significant computation overhead on the CORDIC algorithm. In this paper we present two algorithms and the corresponding architectures (one for both rotation and vectoring modes and the other only for rotation mode) to perform the scaling factor compensation in parallel with the classical CORDIC iterations. With these methods, the scale factor compensation overhead is reduced to a couple of iterations for any word length. The architectures presented have been optimized for conventional and redundant arithmetic.

    Notes: Abstract CORDIC-based algorithms to compute cos $$\cos ^{ - 1} (t),\sin ^{ - 1} (t)$$ and $$\sqrt {1 - t^2 }$$ are proposed. The implementation requires a standard CORDIC module plus a module to compute the direction of rotation, this being the same hardware required for the extended CORDIC vectoring, recently proposed by the authors [T. Lang and E. Antelo, IEEE Transactions on Computers, vol. 47, no. 7, 1998, pp. 736–749.]. Although these functions can be obtained as a special case of this extended vectoring, the specific algorithm we propose here presents two significant improvements: (1) it uses the same datapath width as the standard CORDIC, even when t has 2n bits (to achieve a granularity of 2−n for the whole range). In contrast, the extended vectoring unit requires about 2n bits. (2) no repetitions of iterations are needed (the extended vectoring needs some repetitions). The proposed algorithm is compatible with the extended vectoring and, in contrast with previous implementations, the number of iterations and the delay of each iteration are the same as for the conventional CORDIC algorithm.

    Notes: Abstract We describe a class-specific linear pseudosystolic array, withK processing elements, suitable for partitioned execution of matrix algorithms. This array achieves high efficiency, exploits pipelining within cells in a simple manner, has off-cells communication rate lower than computation rate, a small storage inside each cell (whose size is independent of the size of problems), and external storage. This array has been derived from the application of the multimesh graph (MMG) method to a large class of matrix algorithms. Processing elements (cells) use the decoupled access/execute model of computation, which requires two programs in each cell: one controlling the execution of operations and the other the data transfers. All storage modules in the array are accessed as FIFO queues, without the need for addressing mechanisms. We describe the proposed instruction set, which includes single-instruction loops with no overhead, and block-loops with just one extra instruction. Moreover, cells can nest up to three loops with no added overhead. These features are needed for mapping algorithms with the MMG method. Mapping onto this array is illustrated using the LU-decomposition algorithm, and results obtained with other algorithms are also given. Estimates of performance indicate that it is possible to achieve over 85% efficiency, with low requirements in communication bandwidth and storage.
