Summary 1. By means of measurements of the solid-phase potential, with a simultaneous evaluation of the stabilizing properties of motor oil additives, it has been shown that the greatest stabilizing efficiency is obtained when the difference in donor—acceptor properties of the additive and solid-phase surface is greatest. 2. The change in solid-phase surface potential under the influence of motor oils with additive packages can furnish an explanation for the mechanism of component compatibility in additive formulations; the best service properties will be given by additive packages in which the inter-component interactions are reduced to a minimum. 3. It has been shown that aromatic compounds, particularly phenol, suppress the stabilizing action of succinimide additives, form complexes with these additives, and displace them from the solid-phase surface. 4. It has been shown that the critical temperature for micelle restructuring tcr for detergent additives in the presence of a solid phase depends on the electric potential of the solid surface. 5. It has been shown that, at temperatures above tcr, sulfonate and alkylsalicylate additives are capable of exerting an antioxidant action, reversing the change of the disperse phase of the oxidation products that are oxidation catalysts.
