Notes: In an atomic collision in which total spin angular momentum is conserved, retention of singlet status by either collision partner is strictly forbidden when the other collision partner undergoes a change in multiplicity. The absence of such forbidden transitions appears to be the only stringent test of spin conservation. This is strikingly manifested in the translational energy spectra of boron ions, B+, scattered off CO molecules, with suppression of the interaction channel B+(1S)+CO(X 1Σ+)→B+(1S)+CO (a 3Πrf). For projectile ions in nonsinglet ground states, the singlet–triplet X 1Σ+→a 3Πr excitation of CO is an unusually prominent feature.

Notes: A new calculational method is outlined for the eigenstates of internal rotors characterized by angle-dependent moments of inertia. The procedure is applied to the 1,3-butadiene molecule giving good agreement with transitions calculated by standard techniques. Independent checks are included to justify the numerical accuracy of the outlined procedure. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The distribution of the tunneling current in the semiclassical mode of operation of the scanning tunneling microscope is studied using an axially symmetric 3-D tip. The tip is taken as an equipotential of a dipole, thus giving an analytical form for the potential and the field lines between the tip and the surface, with the latter taken to be atomically flat and corresponding to the zero equipotential plane. Field emission resonance calculations are made, allowing conductance and tip-to-surface separation to be determined as functions of bias voltage at constant current. Results are compared with the measurements of Becker, Golovchenko, and Swartzentruber [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 987 (1985)]. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] SWAINGER1 has stated recently that an increase in volume occurs during the plastic flow of duralumin specimens under a tensile test. While it is generally assumed that volume is unchanged during plastic flow, we should like to point out that, in 1939, Glanville and ...

Notes: Abstract We point out that the acceptance of the relativity principle together with the homogeneity and isotropy of space and the homogeneity of time inevitably leads to the Lorentz spacetime transformation with a universal limiting speed σ. Speculations on possible new four-dimensional symmetries involving a variable “speed of light” such as that proposed by Hsu must therefore be dismissed on such a basis alone. In this paper we draw attention to some logical inconsistencies in Hsu's attempt at establishing a new space-light transformation law, and follow with a discussion on why such an attempt must necessarily fail.

Notes: High-resolution translational energy spectroscopy (0.1 eV full width at half maximum) has been performed on 3 keV C+ ions scattered off N2 molecules. The intriguing energy loss spectrum with well-resolved vibrational structure is explained on the basis of simultaneous transitions involving changes of states in the C+ ion and the N2 molecule.

Notes: High-resolution translational energy spectroscopy is an effective means of obtaining detailed state-selective information, permitting systematic investigation of spin conservation in collisional processes. In this paper, we examine collisional excitation of one selected singlet (N2) and one non-singlet (O2) target by a variety of projectile ions, providing a kaleidoscope of assorted effects.
