Notes: Abstract Effects of subchronic administration of antioxidants against pulmonary damage mediated by cigarette smoke were investigated in rats. Rats were continuously received ascorbic acid,N-acetylcysteine and ginseng extract together drinking water from day 25 after birth. After 30 days of antioxidant supplementation, rats were exposed to cigarette smoke generated from six cigarettes (11 mg tar) for 20 min per day throughout 30 days, and then several biochemical markers related to the redox status in vivo were analyzed in the respiratory system. The cigarette smoke induced mild histological changes in trachea and lungs. The activity of Superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the lung was significantly increased, and catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were increased less than SOD, but total sulfhydryl compounds (Total-SH) content was decreased by cigarette smoking. In spite of the increase in activities of antioxidant enzymes, the inhibitory capacity of lung preparations on in vitro lipid peroxidation using ox brain homogenates was decreased and the change in the capacity was not related to the changes of these intracellular enzymes activities, but with the content of Total-SH. On the other hand, the content of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and the ratio of elastase to anti-protease in the lung homogenates were significantly increased. Supplementation of antioxidants, however, effectively attenuated all of such alterations induced by cigarette smoke. These results indicate that although cigarette smoking induces antioxidant enzymes in the lung as a self defense mechanism, it seems to be not sufficient to protect the pulmonary system, and that chronic antioxidant feeding could be effective to reduce pulmonary damage induced by free radicals.

Notes: [Auszug] Although there has been ample research on iridescent colour in animals, virtually nothing has been done with plants. The iridescent green colour of the cave moss, Schistostega, has been explained by the presence of peculiar epidermal cells which act as refractive lenses, focusing light on specially ...

Notes: Magnetic properties, structure, and morphology of a (Cu 39 Å/Fe 7 Å)×36 multilayer prepared by dc magnetron sputtering were studied mostly by low-temperature conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (LT-CEMS) down to 90 K. LT-CEMS measurements in external magnetic field of 0.1 T rule out superparamagnetism of Fe islands. The multilayer exhibits strong perpendicular anisotropy below its Curie temperature (TC=185 K) and the linear temperature dependence of the magnetization suggests two-dimensional ferromagnetism. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Seedling developmental responses to understory shade combine the effects of reductions in irradiance and changes in spectral quality. We studied the seedling development of two Southeast Asian dipterocarp trees in response to differences in irradiance (photosynthetic photon flux density, PPFD) and spectral quality (red to far-red ratio, R:FR). The two species, Hopea helferei and H. odorata, are taxonomically closely related but differ in their ecological requirements; H. helferei is more drought-tolerant and typically grows in more open habitats. Seedlings were grown in six different replicated shadehouse treatments varying in percentage of solar PPFD and R:FR. The two species differed in the influence of light variables on most seedling characters, particularly for final height, internode distance, branch/trunk internodes, stem length/mass, leaf area/stem length, petiole length, and growth/mol of photons received. Most of the characters in both taxa were primarily influenced by PPFD, but spectral quality also influenced some characters – more so for H. odorata. The latter species grew more rapidly, particularly in the low PPFD treatments, and its leaves were capable of higher photosynthesis rates. However, growth in H. helferei was not reduced in direct sunlight. The growth of this taxon may be constrained by adaptations, particularly in leaves, for drought tolerance.

Notes: Abstract. The Higgs sector of the minimal nonlinear supersymmetric SU(5) model contains three mass parameters. Although these mass parameters are essentially free at the electroweak scale, they might have particular values if they evolve from a particular constraint at the GUT scale through the RG equations. By assuming a number of simple constraints on these mass parameters at the GUT scale, we obtain their values at the electroweak scale through the RG equations in order to investigate the phenomenological implications. Some of them are found to be consistent with the present experimental data.

Notes: Abstract A perfusion system which utilizes a porous ceramic core has been tested for the cultivation of transformed BHK cells which produce human transferrin. A design is presented in which cells are immobilized within the porous ceramic particle and are fed by continuous perfusion of batch liquid medium. It was found that more than 5×109 BHK cells could be supported within the 40 mL ceramic matrix, a ten-fold increase in cell density per unit surface area over the standard roller bottle cultures or a five-fold increase in volumetric cell density over suspension cultures. The cell specific productivity of human transferrin was similar to that observed in suspension culture. The system offers the advantages of significant reduction in serum requirements and the potential for scale-up.

Description / Table of Contents: Gel permeation chromatography and thin layer chromatography have been used respectively to separate and characterize the first seven members of an epoxy resin polymer homologous series on a preparative and analytical scale. The epoxy resin was formed by the reaction between Bisphenol-A and epichlorhydrin. NMR was used to identify the oligomers. The relationship between extinction coefficient and degree of polymerisation was also determined.
