Notes: Summary This article numerically studies the problem of natural convection in a porous medium saturated with cold water, under density inversion, within a vertical annulus. In modeling the flow in the porous medium the non-Darcy effects, which include the Forchheimer inertia and Brinkman viscous effects are taken into account. The governing equations are solved numerically by the finite difference method using the modified strongly implicit procedure. The effects of the inversion parameterΘ m , radius ratioR *, aspect ratioAR, Forchheimer inertia parameter Fc/Pr, and Darcy number parameter Da on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics are discussed in detail. Results show that both the inversion parameter and radius ratio have a significant influence on the flow structure and heat transfer rate in the annulus. It is also found that the mean Nusselt number decreases as the Forchheimer inertia parameter or the Darcy number increases. Moreover, the results obtained here are also compared and favorably agree with numerical results and with experimental data.

Notes: Thin-walled members subject to generalized loading may be modelled by using a finite element approach with conventional stress and strain parameters. A solution method for a class of problems that would use these elements is described. A numberical example of an elastic beam is given.

Notes: The inelastic behaviour of elasto-plastic materials is nonlinear, path-dependent, and is a function of the total plastic strain. For finite strain problems, the total inelastic strain in Lagrangian co-ordinates cannot be decomposed additively. A generalized logarithmic strain which is formulated in ‘updated’ Lagrangian coordinates and obtained by numerical integration of the Lagrangian strain rate is therefore introduced in this paper. By the use of this strain measure, which is additively decomposable, the plasticity model proposed by the authors can be extended to the finite strain range. It is shown that by correlating the generalized plastic modulus in the constitutive relations with the experimental uniaxial true stress-logarithmic strain diagrams, the inelastic behaviour of steel structures subjected to nonproportional loading can be analyzed numerically by using the finite element method.

Notes: Abstract A simple computer-interfaced optical system for measuring the dynamic-local-buckling deformation of thin-walled metal structural-plate elements is described in this paper with two sets of experimental results. The major advantage of this system is its simplicity and economy as well as its speedy automated process for data scanning, acquisition, and analyses by using a microcomputer.

Notes: Equations have been derived to convert Brabender flow curves to Instron flow curves for practical application purposes. The technique involved is simple and has been described and discussed in detail. Nine pairs of Brabender and Instron flow curves of three different high polymers, each at three operating temperatures, have been found to fit each other quite well. The converted Brabender flow curves overlap a part of the Instron curves and extend the shear range toward the Newtonian flow region. An important consequence of this work is that the Brabender Plastograph can now be regarded as a formal viscometer while still functioning as a miniature of the Banbury mixers used in industry. More work is being done to take advantage of this consequence.

Notes: An explicit time-domain transmitting boundary for the analysis of dam-reservoir interactions is presented. This transmitting boundary is a semi-analytical solution of the governing wave equation of the far field of the reservoir. By using this transmitting boundary, the radiation condition and water compressibility can readily be incorporated in the time-domain analysis of dam-reservoir systems. Therefore, the finite element method can be used to accurately analyse a dam-reservoir system including the semi-infinite reservoir while maintaining its efficiency in time-domain analysis. Numerical results have excellent agreement with the available analytical solution. Results also show that the proposed explicit transmitting boundary is more efficient computationally than the implicit transmitting boundary presented by Tsai and Lee.
