    Notes: Purpose - The present paper proposes a theoretical analysis of the stability characteristics of a Jeffcott rotor-hybrid bearing system. It is intended that on the basis of the numerical results drawn from this study, appropriate recess depth, land size, orifice location and speed parameter for stable operation can be determined for use in the bearing design process. Design/methodology/approach - A Jeffcott rotor supported by hybrid oil film bearings with dual-row recesses and orifice- compensated restrictors is studied. In order to facilitate the calculation of film dynamics, using the perturbation method, the Reynolds equation was linearized and subsequently solved using finite difference techniques, whilst the stability maps were determined by the Routh-Hurwitz method. Findings - The data reported here suggest that the stability characteristics of the Jeffcott rotor-bearing system could be improved by the use of shallow, dual-recessed hybrid bearings with orifice compensation. In addition to greater eccentricity ratios, smaller land-width ratios and greater shaft stiffness may also provide shallow-recessed bearings with better stability. In all cases, the stability provided by upstream orifice-sited bearings is better than that provided by center orifice-sited bearings, whilst high-speed parameters may also provide a greater stability threshold. Originality/value - This study proposes an extensive database as a critical requirement in the design of hybrid bearings, in order to ensure that a rotor bearing system is operating stably.

    Notes: We report two 1 ns molecular dynamic (MD) simulations on Z-DNA for which the long-range Coulomb terms are explicitly evaluated by the Particle–Mesh–Ewald method [J. Chem. Phys. 98, 10089 (1993)]. The starting structures were based on the 1 A(ring) resolution crystallographic structure of Gessner et al. [J. Bio. Chem. 264, 7921 (1989)]. The average simulation structures of the DNA compare well to the crystallographic structure; the root-mean-square position deviations for the DNA double-strand heavy atoms are approximately 0.5 A(ring). Watson–Crick hydrogen bonding patterns are preserved without invoking constraints. These results emphasize the importance of proper treatment of the long-range forces for highly ionic systems. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The previously developed particle mesh Ewald method is reformulated in terms of efficient B-spline interpolation of the structure factors. This reformulation allows a natural extension of the method to potentials of the form 1/rp with p≥1. Furthermore, efficient calculation of the virial tensor follows. Use of B-splines in place of Lagrange interpolation leads to analytic gradients as well as a significant improvement in the accuracy. We demonstrate that arbitrary accuracy can be achieved, independent of system size N, at a cost that scales as N log(N). For biomolecular systems with many thousands of atoms this method permits the use of Ewald summation at a computational cost comparable to that of a simple truncation method of 10 A(ring) or less. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: During a 32 h interrupted period of heat processing French fries, the rate of change in the dielectric constants of soybean and sunflower oils was determined. Selected quality parameters (moisture, yield, texture, food energy) were also measured during this period. Heat processing conditions simulated good operational practices for deep fat frying within a commercial setting. The dielectric constant of sunflower increased at a significantly greater rate than soybean oil, indicating increased rates of oil deterioration. Moisture content and yield of the French fries did not differ throughout the 32 h period. Mean texture values (force) were 661 and 643 g for soybean and sunflower oil, respectively. Significant linear interactions among oil and time were found for texture. The food energy content (Kcal/g; dry basis) of French fries heat processed in sunflower oil was significantly lower than those, in soybean oil.

    Notes: Summary An investigation of the influence of short-chain branched length on impact behavior of linear high density polyethylene (HDPE), short-chain branched polyethylenes (SBPEs) and their fiber reinforced samples is reported. The result shows that the total impact energies (Et) increased with increasing branch length at any given temperature used in this study. Similar trend was found for their fiber reinforced samples. For a given polyethylene resin, Et increased with fiber content up to 5%, and then decreased consistently with further increase of fiber content. The amount of Et improved due to the presence of 5% carbon fibers increased significantly with the branch length at temperatures higher than 25°C. In addition, the fracture surface morphology indicated that the adhesion between carbon fibers and PE resins increased with the branch length. However, the adhesion and the amount of Et improved due to the presence of 5% carbon fibers reduced significantly with decreasing temperature. Finally, it was found that Et decreased slightly with rising temperature until the temperature reached around 40°C, and then increased sharply with increasing temperature. It is suggested that this “transition” behavior is related to the molecular motion accounting for the α transition of PE resins.

    Notes: Abstract The polybrominated biphenyl known as “Firemaster” is a flame retardant that accidentally became mixed with cattle feed in Michigan in 1973. The resulting toxicosis to animals and humans prompted extensive study to determine Firemaster's toxic components. Although 4 of 12 major Chromatographic peaks of Firemaster produce mixed enzyme induction, they do not account for the total toxicity. By capillary gas chromatography, it was observed that Firemaster FF-1, lot FH 7042, consisted of at least 60 compounds. We have isolated or otherwise determined the structure for 10 minor components of Firemaster: 3,3′,4,4′-tetra-,2,2′,3,5′, 6-penta-,2,2′,4,4′,5-penta-,3,3′, 4,4′,5-penta-,2,3,3′, 4,4′, 5-hexa-,2,3,3′,4,4′,5′-hexa-, 3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-hexa-, 2,2′, 3,3′,4,5,5′- hepta-,2,3,3′,4,4′,5,5′- hepta-and 2,2′,3,3′,4,5,6′- hepta-bromobiphenyl. All of these polybromobiphenyl congeners except 2,2′,4,4′,5-pentabromobiphenyl are in the latest eluting (most polar) fraction by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of Firemaster. This fraction exhibits biological activity. Hyperkeratosis induction tests were carried out on rabbit ears with 3,3′,4,4′-tetra-,2,2′,3,5′, 6-penta-, 2,3,3′,4,4′,5-hexa-, 3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-hexa-, and 2,2′,3,3′,4,5,6′-heptabromobiphenyl, but only 3,3′,4,4′-tetra- and 3,3′,4,4′,5,5′-hexabromobiphenyl gave positive responses. Apparently, these two compounds and 3,3′,4,4′,5-pentabromobiphenyl are significant contributors to the hyperkeratotic activity of Firemaster.
