Notes: Abstract We report on an acute epidural abscess in a 2-year-old boy, extending from the C1 level to the L5 level. The causative agent was Staphylococcus aureus as proved by pus and blood culture. The infectious source was in the scrotum. The diffuse epidural abscess was readily detected by MRI, which showed hypo-intensity in T1 WI and hyperintensity in gradient echo T2-weighted images. The abscess capsule was enhanced by Gadolinium-DTPA. The patient recovered completely after adequate treatment with antibiotics and follow up MRI showed complete disappearace of the epidural abscess. abscess.

Notes: Summary The coagulation cascade has a potential role in brain edema formation due to intracerebral hemorrhage. In this study blood and other solutions were injected stereotactically into the right basal ganglia in rats. Twenty-four hours following injection, brain water and ion contents were measured to determine the amount of brain edema. Intracerebral blood resulted in an increase in brain water content. The amount of brain edema surrounding the intracerebral hematoma was reduced by a thrombin inhibitor Na-(2-Naphthalenesulfonylglycyl)-4-amidino-DL-phenylalaninepiperidide, (α-NAPAP) infused into the hematoma after the clot had been allowed to solidify. The inhibitor did not alter the actual size of the clot mass. An artificial clot composed of fibrinogen, thrombin, and styrene microspheres also produced brain edema. A fibrin clot led to edema formation even in the absence of mass effect provided by the microspheres. The single component responsible for production of brain edema in all these models was thrombin. The edema was formed in response to a fibrinogen-independent pathway. These results indicate that the coagulation cascade is involved in brain edema that develops adjacent to an intracerebral hematoma.

Notes: summary  The aim of this study was to quantify the extent of abutment screw loosening and thus understand the role of frictional and wear factors in abutment screw loosening by using a cyclic loading device to compare Diamond Like Carbon (DLC)-coated and non-coated implants. The properties of DLC films, including hardness, wear resistance, chemical stability, and biocompatibility, are similar to those of real diamond materials. In this study, a 1-μm thick DLC film served to protect and lubricate a layer of commercially-pure titanium affixed to the top of a dental implant (external hexagon-shaped implant). A cyclic loading force was then applied to the top of the prosthetic portion of the implants in order to determine the difference in looseness of the titanium abutment screw between ten DLC-coated implants and ten non-coated implants. The abutment screw loosening tests were performed with 100 N of force at a frequency of 20 Hz. Data indicate that implants with a DLC coating are more resistant to an applied force (P = 0·002) than are those without the coating. We hope these results will be useful for preventing implant abutment screw loosening.

Notes: Tunneling and thermionic emission through n+-GaAs–i-AlxGa1−xAs–n-GaAs heterojunction barriers are studied as a function of temperature from 77 to 200 K and as a function of externally applied uniaxial stress up to 10 kbar. A procedure to extract parameters for theoretical calculations is also proposed. The parameters extracted from the I-V characteristics of these heterostructures grown on (100) GaAs substrates with different aluminum mole fractions from 0.3 to 0.8 and thicknesses from 300 to 400 A(ring) agree well with those of previous reports. The dependence of the I-V characteristics on uniaxial stress in the 〈100〉 direction perpendicular to the heterojunction plane has also been measured. The experimental results show good agreement with theoretical calculations assuming there is a linear stress-dependent decrease of the energy-band edges of the longitudinal X valleys (Xl) in AlGaAs with respect to the Γ valley in GaAs. The slope of the decrease is found to be 14±2 meV/kbar. This results in an X-valley shear deformation potential of 9.6±1.8 eV, which is believed to be the most accurate measured value to date.

Notes: Abstract Silicon nitride films were deposited by a plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique using silane-ammonia as the reactant gas mixture. The influence of the process parameters such as flow ratio of the reactant gases, pressure, substrate temperature, r.f. power, time of deposition and electrode spacing, on the deposition and etch rates were investigated and experimental results are presented.

Notes: Abstract Silicon-nitride films were deposited by a plasma-enhanced-chemical-vapour-deposition (PECVD) technique using silane-nitrogen as the reactant-gas sources. The influence of the process parameters (such as the flow ratio of the reactant gases, the pressure, the substrate temperature, the radio frequency (r.f.) power, the time of deposition and the electrode spacing) on the deposition and etch rates were investigated and the experimental results are presented in detail.

Notes: Summary The preoperative diagnosis of abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst, in association with ventriculoperitoneal shunts, was made in two patients. Computed tomography and/or ultrasound are radiologicol procedures of choice to demonstrate and localize these cysts.

Notes: Summary Intramedullary tuberculoma is rare, and there has been no report of concurrent intramedullary and intracerebral tuberculomas. We report a 30-year-old man with miliary tuberculosis of the lung. He suffered sudden paraplegia due to tuberculomas in the thoracic spinal cord and MRI showed more tuberculomas in the cervical spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebral and cerebellar hemispheres. The tuberculomas were isointense on the T1-weighted images, and hyperintense on the T2-weighted images; there was marked enhancement with intravenous gadolinium-DTPA. All the tuberculomas were very small 1 year after antituberculous chemotherapy.

Notes: Abstract A 25-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, while in remission, developed paraparesis, with faecal and urinary incontinence. CT demonstrated increased density of the lumbar theca and enlargement of the nerve roots. Myelography showed complete obstruction below the L3 level. MRI showed increased signal intensity in the lumbar sac on T1 weighting, and the cauda equina enhanced with gadolinium-DTPA. Lymphoblasts were seen in the lumbar spinal fluid. After chemotherapy, these abnormalities resolved, as did the paraparesis and incontinence.
