Notes: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to define the abnormal findings of the prostate and seminal tract on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging by using an endorectal coil in patients with suspected obstructive infertility. MR imaging of the seminal tract with an endorectal surface coil was performed on 20 consecutive patients who were suspected of having obstructive infertility. Diffuse atrophy of the seminal vesicles (SVs) was seen in eight patients (40%) and was the most prevalent abnormal finding. It was most often associated with an irregular thickening of the vasa deferentia and small prostate (n = 4; 20%). Other abnormal findings were two mullerian duct cysts; and four cases of the aplasia of SV and vasa deferentia, three of which were associated with rudimentary mesonephric duct. MR imaging of the seminal tract with an endorectal surface coil can clearly demonstrate the various abnormalities of the seminal tract in obstructive infertility.

Notes: Up to 3% of all hospital admissions are due to adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and between 10% and 20% of hospital inpatients develop ADRs. Individual susceptibility to becoming ‘sensitized’ or allergic to a drug is thought to result from altered metabolic handling of the drug. Reactive intermediate compounds form haptens, bind to proteins and induce immune responses. Depending on whether the immune system generates antibodies or sensitized T cells, different clinical patterns of hypersensitivity may result. At present, both in vivo or in vitro tests to identify the culprit drug or to confirm the presence of hypersensitivity are not widely used because they are either not generally robust or not readily accessible. In vitro tests require the true immunogen/antigen to detect antibodies or sensitized T cells. As the metabolic basis underlying susceptibility to adverse drug reactions is elucidated, the resolution of immunological mechanisms and development of reliable tests will ensue. This will also become of great value for prediction of individuals at risk of becoming sensitized by a particular drug.

Notes: Objectives The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaires have shown that the prevalence of childhood asthma is increasing worldwide. Although Asian countries used to have lower prevalence rates of allergic disease than Western countries, this prevalence is increasing in several Asian countries. To determine whether the prevalence of childhood asthma is changing in Korean adolescents, we compared findings from nationwide cross-sectional surveys in 1995 and 2000 on populations of middle-school children using the Korean version of the ISAAC questionnaire. Methods We developed Korean versions of the ISAAC written (WQ) and video (AVQ) questionnaires for allergic diseases. In 1995, the enrolled population consisted of 15 481 children, ages 12–15, and encompassing all three grades in middle school, selected from 34 schools across the nation; the response rate was 97.3%. In 2000, 15 894 children were selected from 31 of the same schools, and the response rate was 96.4%. The SAS system version 8.0 was utilized for all statistical analyses. Results The WQ showed that the lifetime and 12-month prevalence of wheeze did not change from 1995 to 2000. While the 12-month prevalence rates of sleep disturbed by wheezing and night cough increased, the rates of severe attack of wheezing and exercise-induced wheeze did not change, over this period of time. The lifetime prevalence of asthma diagnosis, however, increased significantly, from 2.7% in 1995 to 5.3% in 2000, as did the 12-month prevalence of asthma treatment, from 1.0% in 1995 to 1.9% in 2000. The AVQ also showed increases in the lifetime and 12-month prevalence rates of wheeze at rest, exercise-induced wheeze, nocturnal wheeze, nocturnal cough, and severe wheeze over this period of time. These were especially because of significant increases in the Provincial cities of Korea. Interestingly, the 12-month prevalence of wheeze was consistently high in Cheju with low air pollution indices, whereas this rate was low in Ulsan and Ansan with very high air pollution indices. Risk factor analysis showed that body mass index (BMI), passive smoking, and living with a dog or cat, but not air pollution, were associated with higher risk of wheeze. Conclusions In the 5-year period from 1995 to 2000, the prevalence of asthma symptoms has increased in Korean adolescents, much of it because of increases in Provincial Centers. BMI, passive smoking, and living with a dog or cat are important risk factors. Environmental factors other than air pollution may be associated with increases in asthma, especially in Provincial Centers.

Notes: Abstract. Intraperitoneal implants of cortisol (cortisol suspended in hydrogenated coconut oil) were used to induce a graded hypercortisolism in rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson. There was no obvious reduction in circulating lymphocytes in cortisol-implanted rainbow trout (70, 140 or 210μg/g body weight). Cortisol-implanted fish infected with Cryptobia salmositica had significantly higher parasitaemia and lower antibody litres compared with controls infected with haemonagellate but given coconut oil implants. These confirm the immunodepressive effects of the steroid. The parasite was also more readily detected at the early stage of the infection (shorter prepatent period, more infected fish and higher parasitaemia) in cortisol-implanted fish (140 and 210 μg/g body weight) than in controls. The mortality of the infected cortisol-implanted fish was higher than that of the infected fish implanted with only coconut oil, or the cortisol-implanted but non-infected fish. This in vivo study suggests that protective immunity against C. salmositica is, in part, due to a humoral response.

Notes: We examine various ZnSe spectra to obtain that which best represents the dielectric response ε of ZnSe. The measured evolution of pseudodielectric function 〈ε〉 data with chemical etching shows that the natural overlayer on ZnSe can be modeled accurately only if we assume that it contains amorphous Se. Hence previous assumptions made in correcting 〈ε〉 mathematically are not correct, and data obtained on stripped samples yield the best representation of ε. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Delafossite-type CuAlO2 laminar crystals (R3¯m) were prepared through melt by a cooling method from 1423 K. The layer-by-layer structure of the crystal was observed. Because of the structural anisotropy of the crystal, electrical conductivity along the ab plane (σab) was higher than that along the c axis (σc), σab(approximately-greater-than)25σc. The anisotropy unveiled that the main conduction path of the crystal is closed-packed Cu+ layers. The values of the activation energies which were estimated from the Arrhenius plot were ∼0.20 and ∼0.13 eV for σc and σab, respectively. The linearity in the log σ vs (1/T)1/4 plot and the positive thermoelectric power (〉+300 μV/K) of the crystal suggested p-type variable-range hopping conduction. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Allergy to latex products has become a problem of increasing dimensions, affecting both patients and health-care professionals. Certain high-risk groups and sources of latex exposure have been identified. The clinical manifestations vary from contact eczema through a range of allergic syndromes including life-threatening anaphylaxis. An understanding of the clinical and immunological features of latex allergy provides the basis of therapeutic and preventive strategies. Latex allergy is also becoming a major occupational health issue.
