    Notes: There is a meta-analytic evidence that scores on integrity tests are related to measures of overall job performance, but it is not clear why this relationship exists. One hypothesis that would account for this correlation is that both integrity and performance measures are related to the personality trait conscientiousness, and that statistically controlling for conscientiousness would substantially reduce the integrity-performance correlation. To test this hypothesis, we used the results of three meta-analyses to estimate the components needed to calculate the partial correlation between integrity and performance, controlling for conscientiousness. Partialling had little effect; the best estimate of the corrected zero-order and partial correlations between integrity and performance were 0.34 and 0.28, respectively. Sensitivity analyses suggest that imprecision in the estimates of the various components of this partial correlation cannot reasonably explain the small effects of partialling.

    Notes: Abstract Using a broad-based measure of normal personality, we tested the hypothesis that the trait “conscientiousness” is the best single predictor of scores on two well-researched integrity tests. Data from 180 traditional and nontraditional college students provided clear support for this hypothesis, but also indicated that a number of traits other than conscientiousness were likely to be related to integrity test scores. Scores on all six of the primary scales, and 33 of the 45 homogeneous item clusters (HICs) of the Hogan Personality Inventory were related to scores on the PDI Employment Inventory and/or the Personnel Selection Inventory. Personality variables were better predictors of scores on the PDI Employment inventory, which is a veiled-purpose (also referred to as “personality based”) test, than of scores on the Personnel Selection Inventory, which measures honesty-related attitudes and includes items calling for direct admissions of misdeeds.

    Notes: Summary The single phosphoprotein of fetal calf dentin, having a molecular weight of approximately 94,000 and a phosphorus content of 8% (w/w), was examined by31P NMR spectroscopy. The single resonance at 3.7 ppm at pH 10 and its chemical shift during acid titration established the phosphomonoester nature of the organic phosphorus moiety. During titration of the phosphoprotein with CaCl2 in the presence of inorganic orthophosphate ions, line broadening for the orthophosphate resonance was both phosphoprotein- and calcium-dependent, indicating ternary complex formation. The data indicate that the phosphoprotein of fetal calf dentin binds both calcium and inorganic orthophosphate ions and therefore has the requisite physical chemical properties necessary for it to facilitate the heterogeneous nucleation of a Ca-PO4 solid phase from solution during tissue mineralization.

    Notes: Summary Fractionation of the EDTA-soluble, noncollagenous proteins of the organic matrix of chicken bone by Sephadex G-100 molecular sieving has revealed that the majority of the organic phosphorus is present in two fractions, from one of which a homogeneous phosphoprotein has been isolated. The purified phosphoprotein has an apparent molecular weight of 12,000 and contains bothO-phosphoserine andO-phosphothreonine.31P-NMR spectroscopy demonstrates that all of the organic phosphorus exists in the form of phosphomonoesters which have an average pK2 of 6.8. The phosphoprotein is highly acidic due to its high content of dicarboxylic acids in addition to the presence of organic phosphorus. The characteristic amino acid composition of the phosphoprotein establishes its noncollagenous nature and highlights the differences among bone, dentin, and enamel phosphoproteins. The absence ofγ-carboxyglutamic acid distinguishes it from osteocalcin, the noncollagenousγ-carboxyglutamic acid-containing peptide of bone matrix.

    Notes: Summary Bovine and rat dentin contain aspartylphosphoseryl-enriched collagen-associated phosphoproteins which represent 1–2% of the mineral-free dry weight. These phosphophoryn moieties are not extracted by saturated neutral EDTA, pH 7.4, nor by guanidine hydrochloride-EDTA, pH 7.4. Cyanogen bromide degradation of the dentin matrix does release a high molecular weight fragment containing hydroxyprolyl, hydroxylysyl, prolyl, and glycyl residues as well as high concentrations of aspartyl and phosphoseryl residues, the amounts of which indicate a 50% collagen-50% phosphophoryn nature. Gel filtration and ion exchange chromatography under dissociative, denaturing conditions, as well as in the presence of disulfide bond reducing reagents failed to separate the collagen and phosphophoryn moieties. Hydroxyapatite, which selectively absorbs phosphophoryn, also failed to separate the collagenous component, leading to the conclusion that the moieties represented a covalent conjugate.31P NMR spectroscopy showed the bovine collagen-phosphophoryn complex to contain only phosphomonoesters similar to soluble phosphophoryn. Reduction with [3H]NaBH4, followed by cross-link analysis, did not reveal any reduced aldimine cross-link amino acids. Of the 4 hydroxylysyl residues/1000 in the intact bovine collagen-phosphophoryn complex, one-fourth are periodate resistant, indicating either O-or N-substitution. The periodate-resistant hydroxylysyl residues are located in bacterial collagenase-sensitive regions, and it is likely that these represent hydroxylysine O-glycosides. These data suggest that: (a) the collagenous component of the conjugate derives from a glycosylated peptide, probablyα2CB4, and (b) the association is covalent, but does not involve disulfides, phosphate-, hydroxylysine-, or reducible aldehyde-mediated covalent bonds.
