Notes: Mice of various strains were immunized with pneumococcal polysaccharide type 14 (pneumo-14), and their anti-pneumo-14 antibodies were measured by the Farr test. Mice of strains BALB/c, ST/b, NZB and CBA (Ig allotypes a, e or J) had 300–1700 ng of antibody nitrogen per millilitre of serum on day 7. The corresponding values for C57BL/Ka, RF or AKR mice (allotypes b, c or d) were 40–300 ng/ml. Two families of congenic strains were tested, one with the C57BL and the other with the BALB/c background genome. Their response was either high or low depending on the VH genes, and other gene loci had little effect on the concentration of anti-pneumo-14 antibodies.

Notes: A time-saving and cost-effective polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based method was developed for species-specific detection of the scab pathogens (Streptomyces scabies and S. turgidiscabies) prevalent in potato (Solanum tuberosum) in northern Scandinavia. Species specificity of primers was verified using a collection of previously characterized Streptomyces strains isolated from potato scab lesions in Finland and Sweden. A total of 1245 scab lesions was tested from potato cvs Matilda and Sabina grown in the field in two geographic regions of Finland in 2000 and 2001. Freshly harvested or stored potato tubers were incubated at room temperature (18–21°C) under humid conditions for a few days. Bacterial growth was collected from scab lesions for DNA isolation and PCR. The two scab pathogens were detected in the same potato fields, tubers and scab lesions. The relative incidence of S. scabies was high in freshly harvested tubers but was much lower than that of S. turgidiscabies following storage. Both pathogens were seed-transmitted in Matilda and Sabina after 24 weeks of storage at 4°C.

Notes: Abstract Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) is a new method for economical processing of intermetallic compounds and ceramic materials, as well as composites based on them. On the other hand, mechanical alloying is an effective method for producing highly metastable and, therefore, reactive metal powders. In this paper an overview of partial mechanical alloying is given. The effect of partial mechanical alloying on the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of Ni3Si-compounds is studied. The influence of alloying time on powder characteristics, e.g. particle size distribution, is given. The effect of alloying time on the properties of Ni–Si composite powders and on the characteristics of the SHS process, e.g. propagation rate, is reported. Ni3Si was chosen as the object for this study because of its corrosion and high-temperature oxidation resistance. Like other L12-type compounds, the strength of Ni3Si shows an anomalous behaviour as a function of temperature, therefore, it has potential for high-temperature applications.

Notes: Summary The Finnish Ore Data File has already provided valuable experience on building, maintaining, and using an extensive data file with a great diversity of data. The file attempts to accommodate all relevant data on ore deposits in metamorphosed and strongly deformed Precambrian terrain. Because the deposits dealt with are generally well-studied and documented, they provide a great deal of precise information on ore deposits. The question arises as to how the system could be used internationally, especially bearing in mind developing countries. The two problems which should be solved for this purpose are: first, the forms, codes, and programs should be translated from Finnish into English; second, the structure of the file should be simplified to meet the demands of less studied areas and deposits. However, both problems could be resolved relatively easily without changing the basic principles involved.

Notes: Abstract Data from 34 Ni−Cu deposits of the 315c-striking, 420-km long, and 10–40-km wide Kotalahtinickel belt have been recorded in the previously described system of the Ore Data File of Finland. For comparison data from four Ni−Cu deposits outside the belt have been collected. The statistical treatment of the data begins with cluster analysis and four classes are distinguished on the basis of 303 data elements. These classes form eight groups within the linear belt. Two groups containing the largest deposits, Hitura and Kotalahti, are processed by characteristic analysis, and factor analysis is applied to test the interdependence of the characteristics.

Notes: Summary Twelve volatile phenols were identified in whisky by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Of these phenols 2,4-dimethylphenol was found for the first time in the aroma of whisky. The content of phenol, o-, m-, and p-cresol, guaiacol, p-ethylphenol, p-ethylguaiacol and eugenol in whiskies originating from different countries was determined by gas chromatography as their 2,4-dinitrophenyl ethers using electron capture detection. The results show that Scotch whiskies differ from others in the content of o-, m-, and p-cresol. The odour threshold values of phenols studied were determined in a 10% (v/v) ethanol-water mixture and in some cases also in the whiskies. Cresols have been found to make contribution to the aroma of Scotch whisky.
