Notes: Abstract On the basis of the currents induced by electron fluxes in the Scintillating Fibre Detector (SFD) onboard the EQUATOR-S satellite launched on 2 December 1997, an in-situ acceleration of radiation belt electrons is found to possibly contribute to the increase of the flux of electrons with energies greater than 400 keV. The data acquired between 16 December 1997 and 30 April 1998 on the 500–67300 km, 4° inclination EQUATOR-S orbit show that the increase of the energetic electron flux corresponds to the enhanced geomagnetic activity measured through the Dst index.

Notes: Abstract The total amount of copper in embryos and newly hatched young individuals of Sepia officinalis L. has been determined by microtechnique, using bathocuproine-sulfonate as complexing reagent. During embryonic life, the total amount of copper does not change; it remains at a level close to 3.8 μg. The copper is found in the yolk sac of very early embryos; it is subsequently transferred into the embryo proper. After hatching, the copper content diminishes quickly in starved individuals. Fed S. officinalis also usually lose copper. The reason for this may be that the inner yolk sac of newly hatched individuals contains a great deal of the total copper, which is excreted with the yolk after the latter has become superfluous. Later on, copper must be taken up from the food. The mobilization of protein and copper from the yolk into the blood may account for the early appearance of embryonic hemocyanin in the blood.

Notes: Abstract Adult Sepia officinalis L. were caught in June 1984, in the coastal waters of Wimereux (France). Deposition of the eggs took place in the seawater aquaria of the “Station Marine”. The oxygen consumption of S. officinalis was measured during embryonic and juvenile development. Aerobic metabolism occurs as soon as the early embryonic Stage 21. Oxygen diffuses through the initially thick egg shell; the oxygen level in the perivitelline liquid reaches a maximal value just before hatching (116.7±6.9 mm Hg). Hatchings display only a slight increase in oxygen consumption compared to embryos in the last stage of development. Respiration experiments with 40 d old juveniles showed that oxygen consumption increases with temperature, but is not affected by photoperiod. Experiments under increasing hypoxia revealed that S. officinalis juveniles are good regulators and maintain a constant oxygen consumption in the range of 4 to 7 mg O2l-1. Juveniles successfully recover from an hypoxic stress of 2 mg O2l-1 maintained for 1 h. This suggests that the respiratory pigments (pre-hemocyanins) of 40 d-old juveniles have a high oxygen affinity and/or that these juveniles have the ability to adapt to anaerobic conditions.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution spectroscopy of the 2ν3 band of SF6 is reported by means of Doppler-free two-photon transitions. Parts of spectra are measured with accuracy of 10−9. This technique applied to SF6 should lead to an assignment of the spectra involved.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors analyse the result of a series of 119 cases with a mean follow-up of 73 months, according to a personal biomechanical and anatomo-pathological classification. The indication for the anterior approach depends on two strategies: cord decompression-anterior column reconstruction for trauma with anterior major injuring vector, stabilization of a posterior reduction for trauma with posterior major injuring vector.

Notes: Summary The load-displacement behaviour of six fresh human cadaveric L2–L3 spinal segments was studied through in vitro testing in flexion, and torsion. The lumbar spinal units were tested firstly intact, then instrumented by the SB Charité III intervertebral disc prosthesis with respect to the surgical requirements. These experiments highlighted an increase of mobility yielded by the implantation of the prosthesis, especially in torsion. Numerical models of both the L2–L3 spinal segment and the disc prosthesis were used. Simulations were performed on an intact spinal segment model, as well as on an instrumented segment model, by reproducing the same boundary conditions as used experimentally. The results of these simulations indicated a realistic behaviour of the model when comparing numerical results to experimental ones. This allowed us to validate our numerical models and to use them to calculate compressive forces transmitted by the posterior facets. Numerical results indicated an increase of the facet loading during torsion, yielded by the implantation of the prosthesis. Three technical changes to the original design were then simulated. These changes were meant to increase the global stiffness of the implanted segment, and to reduce articular facet loading in torsion. One of the solutions reduced axial rotation in torsion without decreasing articular loading. This observation is explained through a simple mechanical model of a lumbar spinal unit in torsion. This mechanical model was used to define the last solution, which succeeded in both reducing axial rotation and intra-articular loading.

Notes: Summary  We evaluated the direct location in the globus pallidus (GP) under stereotactic MRI (sMRI) guidance in five parkinsonians treated with chronic deep brain stimulation (four bilaterally). The sMRI consisted of three orthogonal (horizontal, frontal, sagittal) sets of images obtained with a stereotactic frame and its localiser. The sMRI was coupled with ventriculography to compare the location with the classic indirect method based on commissural landmarks. The target was defined on T2-weighted slices in the anterior part of the medial GP, at the vertex of the nucleus. It was reached via one track with a semi-micro-electrode and step by step high frequency stimulation, then replaced by a quadripolar electrode once we located the site enabling the optimal clinical improvement. Stereotactic x-rays localised the final position of the electrode. A company software matched sMRI, ventriculography, and peroperative (perop) x-rays, with reference to the stereotactic location boxes. We analysed the effects of acute (perop) and chronic (six-month follow-up) stimulation of active plots (acplots), i.e. leading to optimal clinical improvement. Three distances with reference to the acplots were measured both on sMRI and ventriculography: the laterality from the median sagittal plane of the third ventricle; the anterior position from the midpoint of the intercommissural line (Icl), and the vertical position with regard to the Icl. We then compared the differences in measurements (n=64) with the Bland and Altman method. The mean difference was 0.09 mm with 95% of the values between ±1 mm, but only the laterality had a statistically significant agreement (all the differences included between ± two times the standard deviation of the mean). The acplots distances from the dorsal, ventral, and medial boundaries of GP (defined by manual surrounding on frontal and horizontal planes) were measured on sMRI. With one exception, the acplots were all included in the nucleus. The six-month acplots were located dorsally with reference to the perop ones. Clinical benefit at six-months follow-up showed results comparable to the literature. Direct location of GP target based on sMRI seems a simple and reliable method.

Notes: An excimer emission band attributed to a transition from the first excited state to the ground state of the van der Waals Ar(OD) molecule has been observed in experiments where D2O was dissociated in presence of rare gases by two photons of a quadrupled YAG laser (266 nm). KrOD has also been observed in the same experiments. The ArOD excimer band comprises three main peaks at 313.9, 315.1, and 316.0 nm as well as several minor ones nearer to the main OH (A2 Σ+ ,v=0–X2 Π,v=0) emission band. The emission profile is realistically simulated by a one dimension model using recently published potentials for the excited state and modeling the ground state by that of the ArF X 2 Σ+ state. This result tends to demonstrate that the ground state geometry of Ar(OD) involved in the transition is probably L shaped although the high intensity of the observed excimer band is not satisfactorily explained.
