    Notes: Summary Sixteen depressed elderly patients in hospital (mean age 81 years) received a single oral dose of nortriptyline prior to commencing treatment with this drug. Plasma nortriptyline measurements after the single dose were used to calculate the plasma drug clearance and to predict the daily dose required for each patient to achieve a steady-state concentration within the suggested therapeutic range of 50–150 µg·l−1. Using these dosage regimes, the mean observed steady-state concentration showed a significant correlation with the predicted values (r=0.71, p〈0.002). All patients had steady-state concentrations within or very close to this suggested range (mean 106, range 38–157 µg·l−1). Use of the prediction test can prevent the development of toxic plasma concentrations and enhance the possibility of therapeutic success. Our findings suggest that a safe starting dose of nortriptyline for the elderly is 30 mg per day.

    Notes: Summary We have determined the pharmacokinetics of meptazinol after its intravenous and intramuscular administration in a crossover study in 7 elderly hospital in-patients (〉70 years), and have compared with the results from 14 healthy, young volunteers (ages 20–40 years). The systemic availability after i.m. administration was comparable to that after i.v. administration, a result consistent with the physicochemical properties of the drug. There was a slight, but statistically significant (p〈0.01) prolongation in t1/2z in the elderly (mean 2.93 h) compared with the young (mean 2.06 h). This was associated with a 25% lower clearance in the elderly rather than with any alteration in volume of distribution. However, these changes would not appear to be substantial enough to require a revised dosage recommendation for meptazinol for this age group.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents the results of experiments which study the behaviour of the copper vapour laser as a function of its major performance parameters: pulse repetition frequency and tube temperature. Explanations are put forward for the factors which limit the output from the copper laser at the extremes of these parameters. Generalized performance relationships and scaling laws are also presented. The experimental results are summarized in a contour map of laser efficiency.

    Notes: Abstract Hydrologic modification of coastal wetlands is pervasive, continuing and longstanding in the US. Appreciation for the subtleties of the direct and indirect effects of hydrologic changes on emergent vegetation, soils and co-dependent flora and fauna is contributing to restoration efforts. However the results of wetland restoration/rehabilitation are moslty empirical, rather than scientific in understanding. Science is contributing to the management interest by providing documentation of the past and present failures and successes, and, unveiling the fundamental understanding necessary to move from one wetland to another in an informed and adaptable manner. The papers in this volume are introduced within this framework.

    Notes: Abstract There are two independent reasons to expect the existence of a new type of weak interaction, involving elastic scattering of electrons and nucleons, e+N→e+N. One is the successful development of unified theories of weak and electromagnetic interactions, based on isospin multiplets of leptons, hadrons and vector mesons. The other is the experimental discovery of the elastic scattering of high energy neutrinos from nucleons, ν+N→ν+N. Together, these developments provide strong motivation to the search for weak electron-nucleon interactions in ordinary atoms, through a breakdown of Laporte's rule. I will present a review of recent developments in this field, including a qualitative discussion of this type of weak interaction and a short summary of the experiments in progress. I will also give a more detailed discussion of one particular experiment at Michigan, involving microwave transitions in a metastable hydrogen beam. At present, there is no experimental evidence of a failure of Laporte's rule. The most recent data from optical activity in bismuth vapor, has probably ruled out the gauge model of Weinberg-Salam.
