    Notes: This work investigates the charge transfer and Al(Ga) p-Ni d hybridization effects in the intermetallic Ni3Al (Ni3Ga) alloy using the Ni L3,2 and K edge and Al (Ga) K x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements. We find that the intensity of near-edge features at the Ni L3 edge in the Ni3Al (Ni3Ga) alloy decreased with respect to that of pure Ni, which implies a reduction of the number of unoccupied Ni 3d states and an enhancement of the Ni 3d state filling in the Ni3Al (Ni3Ga) alloy. Two clear features are also observed in the Ni3Al (Ni3Ga) XANES spectrum at the Al (Ga) K edge, which can be assigned to unoccupied Al 3p-(Ga 4p-) derived states in Ni3Al (Ni3Ga). The threshold at the Al K-edge XANES for Ni3Al shifts towards the higher photon energy relative to that of pure Al, suggesting that Al loses some p-orbital charge upon forming Ni3Al. On the other hand, the Ni K edge shifts towards the lower photon energy in Ni3Al (Ni3Ga) relative to that of pure Ni, suggesting a gain of charge at the Ni site. Thus both Al and Ni K-edge XANES results imply a transfer of charge from Al 3p orbital to Ni sites. Our theoretical calculations using the spin-polarized first-principles pseudofunction method agree with these results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract About half of the Caucasian patients with chronic polyneuropathy and IgM paraproteinemia show serum anti-myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and anti-sulfoglucuronosyl glycosphingolipid (SGGLs) activities. These antibody activities have been demonstrated to react with a carbohydrate epitope known as the HNK-1 or sulfoglucuronic acid (SGA) epitope. However, in Asian populations the occurrence of serum anti-SGA activities has been reported to be relatively rare. We investigated 5 cases of chronic polyneuropathy with IgM paraproteinemia from Taiwan and found that 3 of them had high-titer serum anti-SGA (SGGL/MAG) antibody activities. The clinical symptoms of these 3 patients were consistent with sensory dominant polyneuropathy with a severer involvement of the lower limbs than of the upper limbs. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies revealed severe sensory nerve involvement (no response in 3 cases) and moderate slowing of motor conduction velocity (MCV) without conduction block. The decrease in MCV correlated well with anti-SGA antibody titer (less than 30 m/s with the titration of 1:12,800, normal 55–60 m/s). Pathological findings showed active demyelinating polyneuropathy with myelin ovoid and myelinated fiber loss. Our data suggest that anti-SGGL antibody activities may not be very rare among Asian populations. Additionally, there seems an intriguing possibility that the titer of this antibody correlates with the severity of peripheral nerve involvement in patients of demyelinating polyneuropathy with IgM paraproteinemia.

    Notes: A new method for predicting the time to brittle failure of polyethylenes is proposed. The method includes modeling slow crack growth in polyethylenes and the experimental determination of material parameters for the model. The model is based on the concept of the crack layer, i.e., a system consisting of the strongly interacting crack and process zone and the kinetic equations which govern the crack layer growth. The process zone in polyethylenes usually appears to be a thin strip of drawn material extending along the crack line. This permits a characterization of the crack layer by two parameters: the crack and process zone lengths. The two-parameter crack layer kinetic model allows description of slow crack growth as the discontinuous (stepwise) process which is commonly observed in the brittle fracture of polyethylenes. The model also predicts a relationship between time to failure and applied stress, identical to that established experimentally. The material parameters of the kinetic model can be determined by experiments on smooth specimens, i.e., are independent of slow crack growth and require relatively short-term observations. Thus, the combination of the material testing and the mathematical modeling of the crack layer evolution is proposed as a method for lifetime prediction in the brittle fracture of polyethylenes. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
