Notes: SHS-gravitational process was developed to synthesize the ceramic lined steel pipe, especiallyfor elbow, conical pipe, three-way and four-way pipe and pipe with a small diameter. InSHS-gravitational process, the molten ceramic, which separated out from the reaction products due totheir density difference, solidified to form the ceramic lined layer in the steel pipe when contacted withthe steel pipe wall. With an X-ray diffractometer and a scanning electron microscope, it can be found thatthe ceramic layer is composed of α-Al2O3 and FeAl2O4. A small amount of iron also remains in theceramic layer. There is a thin equiaxed grain area of alumina near the steel pipe wall, and then aluminawas grown in form of dentrite to the surface of ceramic layer. FeAl2O4 distributes among alumina dentrite.Although the ceramic layer was solidified from one end to another end of a pipe, the microstructure ofceramic layer was almost uniform throughout the whole length of the pipe

Notes: Fifty-three southern USA Borrelia isolates were characterized using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting analysis (RAPD). Twenty-nine types were recognized among 37 B. andersonii strains, seven types among eight B. bissettii strains, and seven types among seven B. burgdorferi sensu stricto strains. Strain TXW-1 formed a separate RAPD type. Nearly complete sequences of the rrs genes from 17 representative southern Borrelia were determined. The similarity values were found to be 96–100% within the B. burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex, 94–99% among the relapsing fever borreliae, and 93–99% between the two complexes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the Borrelia strains we analyzed could be divided into two parts: the B. burgdorferi s.l. complex and the relapsing fever borreliae complex. TXW-1 segregated with the North American relapsing fever borreliae and formed a separate subbranch.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes two types of regularization to the basic quasistatic double-well potential problem in one space dimension. One model features a spatially nonlocal term while the other incorporates the use of an order parameter. Some basic existence and regularity results for these modified models are derived and some numerical calculations that show hysteresis and motion of phase boundaries are presented.

Notes: Abstract We present two defect correction schemes to accelerate the Petrov-Galerkin finite element methods [19] for nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equations. Using asymptotic expansions of the errors, we show that the defect correction schemes can yield higher order approximations to either the exact solution or its derivative. One of these schemes even does not impose any extra regularity requirement on the exact solution. As by-products, all of these higher order numerical methods can also be used to form a posteriori error estimators for accessing actual errors of the Petrov-Galerkin finite element solutions. Numerical examples are also provided to illustrate the theoretical results obtained in this paper.

Notes: A coefficient inverse problem of the one-dimensional hyperbolic equation with overspecified boundary conditions is solved by the finite difference method. The computation is carried out in the x direction instead of the usual t direction. The original boundary condition and the overspecified boundary data are used as the new initial conditions, and the original data at t = 0 are used to compute the coefficient directly. The computation time used by this scheme is almost equal to that for solving the hyperbolic equation in the same region once, even though the inverse problem is essentially nonlinear and hence more difficult to solve. An error estimate is obtained that guarantees the stability of the scheme marching in the x direction. Several numerical experiments are carried out to show the convergence and other properties of the scheme. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
