    Notes: Silverleaf whitefly (SLW), Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring, is one of the most noxious pests of numerous field and vegetable crops, causing billions of dollars worth of damage throughout the world. SLW is a phloem feeder whose feeding is likely to interfere with phloem transport. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that SLW infestation impairs carbohydrate export from source leaves, and consequently increases their carbohydrate content. The youngest fully expanded leaves of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L., cv. Siv'on), grown under SLW-infested and noninfested conditions, were characterized for their diurnal changes in carbohydrate content and photoassimilate export. SLW infestation induced a considerable reduction in net photosynthetic rate (Pn), coupled with increased sucrose, glucose and fructose and decreased starch concentrations. Export rate was determined after CO2 pulse-labeling both by in situ monitoring of leaf radioactivity and by analyzing the content and radioactivity of the major carbon metabolites. Radioactive counting indicated a lower rate of C efflux for the infested plants. A similar trend was found for the specific activities of sucrose and the three soluble sugars combined (sucrose, glucose and fructose). A single exponential decay function with asymptote was fitted to the above efflux curves. All the calculated exponential coefficients demonstrated lower export rates after SLW injury. These results indicate that SLW impairs photoassimilate export, suggesting possible down-regulation of Pn due to increased foliar soluble sugar contents.

    Notes: In our previous work, we have produced a photochromic wool fabric by applying a thinlayer of hybrid silica-photochromic dye onto the wool surface. The coating showed a very fastoptical response, but had little influence on the fabric handle, however durability was low. In thiscontext, we reported that durability of the hybrid layer can be improved by introducing epoxygroups into the silica matrix via co-hydrolysis and co-condensation of an alkyl trialkoxysilane(ATAS) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). The presence of epoxy groups in thesilica enhanced both washing and abrasion durabilities. Also, the optical response speed wasslightly increased as well. Effects of the type of alkyl silane and the GPTMS:alkyl silane ratio onthe coating durability, fabric handle and optical response were examined

    Notes: Bemisia argentifolii (Bellows and Perring), has been a severe pest of numerous field and vegetable crops for many years. Nevertheless, little has been reported on the complex interactions between SLW and its host plants. This study was aimed at investigating the effects of SLW on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) photosynthesis and productivity under various irrigation and N fertilization regimes. Cotton plants (cv. Siv'on) were examined during an entire growing season in two factorial-designed screenhouse experiments consisting of two irrigation regimes (I) × two N application rates × two SLW levels (noninfested vs. infested). Buildup of the SLW population was markedly higher on N-fertilized plants that on N-deficient plants. Seed cotton yield was reduced by SLW infestation under all combinations of I × N treatments by about 40%. Yield reduction (noninfested minus infested) was significantly correlated with the number of SLW adults on the maximally infested leaf at peak flowering (r2 = 0.94, P 〈 0.05 in 1995; r2 = 0.91, P 〈0.05 in 1996). Photosynthetic rate decreased 50% at about 60 d after SLW introduction. The relative photosynthetic rate (infested/noninfested) was significantly correlated with SLW adult density on the maximally infested leaf (r2 = 0.72, P 〈 0.001 in 1995; r2 = 0.53, P 〈 0.01 in 1996). The reduced photosynthetic rate was associated with reduction in chlorophyll variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) and fluorescence yield. No substantial changes were found in stomatal conductance, intercellular CO2 concentrations, and leaf chlorophyll content. These findings indicate that SLW infestation impairs, either directly or indirectly, the photochemical reaction of the photosynthetic system in cotton plants.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the morphology of and surface modification by titanium dioxide (TiO2) deposits on porous ceramic substrates placed in a horizontal, tubular, hot-wall, atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor with titanium tetraisoperoxide (TTIP) as the precursor. The TiO2 particles are produced from TTIP through two routes: first by thermal decomposition which then kicks off hydrolysis. The deposit characteristics is found to be location dependent. Those at the reactor entrance and exit are different from that within the reactor. Within the reactor, the deposit characteristics is further found to depend strongly on the deposition temperature (Td) and is almost independent of the flow-rate and concentration of the reactant. With a Td of about 380 °C, the deposited TiO2 forms a forest-like structure with poor adhesivity to the substrate and results in an insignificant pore size reduction for the substrate. If Td drops down to about 300 °C, the deposited TiO2 forms a rock-packing structure with good adhesivity to the substrate and can reduce the pore size of the substrate from about 1–2 μm down to about 64 nm. At both the reactor entrance and exit, the deposited TiO2 are loosely-packed spherical particles of average diameter of 140–400 nm. A theory, based on whether or not the reaction is gas-phase or surface dominated, is proposed to explain the dramatic effect of Td.

    Notes: A free, vertical jet of liquid plunging into a uiescent surface of the same liquid entrains the surrounding gas into the receiving liquid to form bubbles. The entrainment characteristics of such jets of Newtonian liquids of varying physical properties have been investigated by means of high-speed photography.Although both laminar and turbulent jets entrain gas bubbles, the mechanisms governing the entrainment process of the two types of jets are clearly different. Entrainment by turbulent jets results from the disturbances on the free surface caused by the jet instability; entrainment by laminar jets is accomplished by the formation of a thin shell of gas around the jet at the point of entrance, by the development of oscillations in the shell, and by its subsequent breakup into bubbles.Entrainment occurs only when the average jet velocity exceeds a certain critical value termed minimum entrainment velocity. For a laminar jet having a flat velocity profile at the point of entrance, the following correlation permits prediction of the minimum entrainment velocity: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Weber\;number} = 10\left({{\rm Reynolds\;number}} \right)^{0.74} $$\end{document} where the dimensionless numbers are based on the liquid properties and the jet diameter at the point where the jet meets the surface of the receiving liquid.
