Notes: Abstract MLK-3 kinase is a widely expressed serine/ threonine kinase that bears multiple protein interaction domains and regulates signals mediated by the stress-responsive pathway. Thus, MLK-3 signaling affects numerous cellular processes, raising the possibility that MLK-3 might play a role in oncogenesis. In this report, we describe the fine mapping of the MLK-3 gene within the 11q13.1 chromosomal region. By integrating data from somatic cell hybrids and double color fluorescence in situ hybridization on metaphase chromosomes and DNA fibers, MLK-3 has been assigned approximately 1 Mb telomeric of PYGM, close to the D11S546 locus. Since the MEN1 susceptibility locus is also located within the 11q13.1 region, we have carried out Southern and Northern blot analyses, as well as protein truncation assays to establish whether abnormalities in MLK-3 lead to the development of this familial cancer syndrome. Our observations exclude MLK-3 as the MEN1 gene.

Notes: The crystal structure of human muscle creatine kinase has been determined by the molecular-replacement method and refined at 3.5 Å resolution. The structures of both the monomer and the dimer closely resemble those of the other known structures in the creatine kinase family. Two types of dimers, one with a non-crystallographic twofold symmetry axis and the other with a crystallographic twofold symmetry axis, were found to occur simultaneously in the crystal. These dimers form an infinite `double-helix'-like structure along an unusual long crystallographic 31 axis.

Notes: The structure of agkistrodotoxin crystallized under basic conditions has been determined at 2.8 Å resolution by the molecular-replacement technique and refined to a crystallographic R factor of 0.194 and a free R factor of 0.260 with good stereochemistry. The molecular packing in the crystal differs from other PLA2s. The six molecules in the asymmetric unit form three dimers linked by Ca2+ ions in a near-perfect six-ligand octahedral coordinating system. Extensive intermolecular hydrophobic interactions occur at the interfacial recognition site of each neurotoxin molecule, which provides an insight into phospholipase A2–membrane interactions. This hydrophobic interaction-induced molecular association along the interfacial recognition site suggests a self-protection mechanism of agkistrodotoxin.

Notes: Creatine kinase is a key enzyme in the energy homeostasis of cells and tissues with high and fluctuating energy demands. Human muscle MM creatine kinase is a dimeric protein with a molecular weight of \sim43 kDa for each subunit. It has been crystallized by the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method using 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol as precipitant. The crystals belong to the enantiomorphous space group P6_222 or P6_422 with cell parameters of a=b=89.11 and c=403.97 Å. The asymmetric unit of the crystal contains two subunits. A data set at 3.3 Å resolution has been collected using synchrotron radiation.

Notes: Abstract: Morphological and biochemical parameters of neuroblastoma differentiation were assessed in 12 clonal derivatives of the N-18 mouse neuroblastoma cell line selected for their ouabain-resistant (ouar) property. When cultured in a normal growth medium, nine of the 12 ouar cell lines exhibited a more complex pattern of neurite outgrowth than the parental N-18 cells. The morphological pattern most frequently observed with the ouar cells was the extension of several branched processes per cell. This pattern of spontaneous neurite outgrowth in the ouar cell lines can be correlated with an increase in expression of the 47,000-dalton R1 cyclic AMP (cAMP)-binding protein. The growth rate, intracellular level of cAMP, and acetylcholin-esterase activity of the ouar cell lines were not significantly different from those of the parental N-18 neuroblastoma cells. Treatment of the parental and ouar neuroblastoma cell lines with 1 mM N6,O2-dibutyryl cAMP promoted an elaborate pattern of neurite outgrowth and marked increases in acetylcholinesterase and R1 cAMP-binding activities. The distinctive pattern of differentiation phenotype exhibited by the ouar cells and the dibutyryl cAMP-induced differentiated neuroblastoma cells suggests that these two protocols yielded different degrees of differentiation. Furthermore, our results suggest a linkage of the biochemical events underlying ouabain resistance and expression of differentiation phenotypes in the mouse neuroblastoma cells.

Notes: Semiconductor quaternary alloys Zn1−xMgxSySe1−y were grown on GaAs substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The crystal structures were determined from x-ray diffraction spectra. The Raman spectra of both perpendicular and parallel polarization geometries were measured. The following long-wavelength optical-phonon modes were identified: ZnSe-like TO and LO modes, and MgSe-like and ZnMgS-like LO modes. For the alloys with the same Mg composition x, the vibration frequencies of ZnSe-like TO and LO modes were observed to change linearly with S composition y for y〈0.5. The vibration frequency of the MgSe-like LO mode was also observed to change linearly with y for 0.1〈y〈0.5. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper investigates EFL learners’ perception of prior knowledge and its roles in reading comprehension. It is based on a survey conducted among 400 EFL students studying at secondary and tertiary levels in China. Through the analysis of the ranked multiple responses to the questions posed in the questionnaire, the paper shows that EFL students in mainland China believe that their command of English vocabulary plays a crucial role in their reading comprehension. However as their linguistic knowledge increases, they tend to attach less importance to their linguistic knowledge, especially the knowledge of English syntax and formal structures. At the same time, conceptual and sociocultural knowledge seems to gain greater importance. Furthermore, the perceived importance of linguistic knowledge seems to start diminishing around the end of secondary education, when EFL students have acquired a vocabulary of about 3000 words and the basic knowledge of English syntax and formal structures. The final replacement of linguistic knowledge by conceptual or sociocultural knowledge as the top factor that affects their reading comprehension seems to take place one year after the beginning of the tertiary EFL course. This may well be considered as an indication of the EFL threshold level for EFL students in China.

Notes: Abstract A full-text retrieval method, concurrent frame signature file (CAT) is proposed. The method places emphasis on creating opportunities for concurrent access to the disk-resident signature file, without resorting to redundant storage. Thus, the advantage of low space overhead availed by signature file methods is retained, while the response time of retrieval is significantly improved when implemented on a multiprocessor with multiple disks. Performance of the proposed method is examined by analysis and experiment. Results from a simulation study on the BBN Butterfly TC2000 multiprocessor showing the speed of the proposed method are very promising in both relative and absolute terms.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, we revisit observability defined in Lin and Wonham (1988a). We show that although the original definition is intended for event observation with projection, its significance goes beyond its original intent. Specifically, we show that (1) supervisory control with state observation can be studied in terms of event observation; (2) supervisory control problems with event mask can be converted to problems with event projection; and (3) nondeterminism is closely related to unobservability.
