    Notes: Abstract Most multimedia systems are by nature distributed. Stored digital media applications such as video-on-demand involve many separate clients and servers; communication applications such as videoconferencing involve users in distinct geographic locations. The retrieval of multimedia data for these applications across computer networks must be done in a timely fashion to accommodate end-to-end delay constraints, buffer space limitations, and inter-media synchronization. In this paper, we present a mechanism called thelimited a priori (LAP) scheduler which manages the retrieval of distributed multimedia data using network delay modeling. The LAP scheduler determines network load changes and estimates packet delay using a dynamic filtering algorithm. We show the bounds of accuracy for this technique and describe its suitability with respect to digital media traffic across a general-purpose network.

    Notes: Abstract Multimedia data often have time dependencies that must be satisfied at presentation time. To support a general purpose multimedia information system, these timing relationships must be managed to provide utility to both the data presentation system and the multimedia author. Timing management encompasses specification, data representation, temporal access control, playout scheduling, and run-time intermedia synchronization. In this paper we describe the components of our framework for supporting time-dependent multimedia data encompassing these areas and how they are assembled into a unified system.

    Notes: Abstract A video-on-demand server must satisfy a large customer base and a diverse archive of movies under changing movie popularity and daily load peaks. These requirements must be satisfied under the constraints imposed by storage device costs, capacities, I/O bandwidths, and geographic locations. In this paper we describe a partitioning of video data (movies) onto a video-on-demand storage hierarchy to achieve efficient storage and I/O bandwidth use. Our approach uses a probabilistic model of movie popularity in data distribution and replication to balance user requests with available disk I/O bandwidth. The results can be applied in the design of a general, distributed video-on-demand system.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe the Virtual Video Browser (VVB) software application designed to allow the interactive browsing and content-based query of a video database and to facilitate the subsequent playout of selected titles. The VVB is a manifestation of our mechanisms for the location, identification, and delivery of digital audio and video in a distributed system which can be extended to several application domains including multimedia-based home entertainment, catalog shopping, and distance learning. The VVB employs a two phase retrieval process to serve its users. In the query phase, user queries are sent to a metadata server for processing. In the subsequent playout phase, a connection is established between the client workstation and a video server for the delivery of video data. The VVB incorporates a simple query interface that lets users specify their preferences to the system and retrieve the appropriate video. The application is designed to work in a distributed environment where video sequences are stored in different databases interconnected via a network. It has been shown to be a viable target application useful for investigating research problems related to building interactive multimedia systems.
