Notes: Stress distributions in selectively overgrown self-organized GaN hexagonal pyramids have been analyzed by continuum elasticity theory. This has been carried out using the values for the moduli of elasticity found in the literature and an effective lattice mismatch between the GaN and the substrate that was determined from the Raman shift of the GaN buffer layer. The results of compressive stress in the buffer layer, tensile stress on the lower half of the pyramids' facet surface, and full relaxation for approximately the upper 2/3 of the pyramids are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental observations that were deduced from cathodoluminescence microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract This work is the first step in a systematic application of a resonant scattering theory due to Huby in which the real Weinberg state is the crucial feature. The scattering cross sections ofl=0,1, 2 partial waves in a square well potential are calculated with the aid of the real Weinberg states. Perfect agreement with the exact calculation is obtained. Approximate cross sections resulting from a schematic approximation in the formalism which, apart from other desirable features, display the Breit-Wigner energy factor in the phase shifts, are also found to agree perfectly with the exact calculation. Some simple approximations of the complex and real Weinberg states are investigated, but none is found to be satisfactory forl〉0 partial waves in complete contrast to works of previous authors on thel=0 partial wave.

Notes: Abstract The representation of a nucleon bound state by a single Hankel function is generalised such that the bound state is expanded as a linear combination of Hankel functions of the samel-value. The singularity at the origin due to the use of Hankel functions is removed. The arguments and coefficients of the expansion are determined by a variational method.

Notes: Abstract Bremsstrahlung double cross sections for α + α collisions are computed with the wave functions obtained by using a single-configuration resonating-group method (RGM). With no adjustable parameters, the calculated values are shown to agree well with experiment. For reliable results, it is found that the intercluster interaction must yield a good fit to the empirical phase shifts in the energy region where relatively sharp resonance states exist. A simplified procedure (A-RGM), in which the antisymmetrization of the wave function is only approximately taken into account, has also been adopted to consider the bremsstrahlung problem. Comparisons between RGM and A-RGM results yield the useful conclusion that fitting empirical phase shifts alone is not a sufficient criterion to ensure accuracy in the bremsstrahlung cross sections and a proper description of the nuclear system in the region of strong cluster overlap is also important.

Notes: Abstract The7Li charge form factor is calculated with a procedure in which the antisymmetrization of the wave function is simply approximated by the adoption of an intercluster renormalized function obtained by operating on the resonating-group relative-motion function with the square root of the norm operator. The investigation shows that this approximation prescription can yield satisfactory results in the low-q 2 region but becomes somewhat inaccurate whenq 2 becomes large.

Notes: Abstract High-temperature moiré interferometry was applied to obtain full-field creep-crack-tip displacements of a three-point bend Al 2024-T4 specimen uner constant temperature of 200°C up to 720 hr.C * was evaluated by the moiré data obtained at discrete time intervals. Test results indicate that under steady-state creep condition, the creepcrack-tipv-displacement rate agrees with the asymptotic solution based on theC * integral. However, no creeping behavior was observed for the crack-tipu-displacement field aftert=276 hr. This discrepancy may be due to the initial large creep-crack-tip blunting and cavitation damage which alter the creep-crack-tip singular field such that theC * integral is no longer applicable to characterize the steady-state creep-crack-tip field. Postmortem studies of the tested specimen also revealed transgranular fracture path with the ordered grain boundaries perpendicular to the crack line, which may relate to the existence of the substantial crack-tip blunting and noncreeping behavior of theu-displacement field, i.e., the size and shape of material grain boundaries play an important role in the crack-tip-creeping behavior of the material.
