    Notizen: Abstract Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), neonate larvae and adults were bioassayed with the antifeedant epilimonol. Three-day exposure of neonate larvae resulted in increasing delays in development (appearance of 4th instars) corresponding to increasing dosages. At a dosage of 20 μg/cm2, development was delayed by about 40% without other detrimental effects. Mouthpart coating of adult beetles with epilimonol emulsion resulted in significant feeding reductions, while injection of epilimonol into the haemolymph of female adults did not elicit significant feeding reduction or oviposition suppression. The results indicated that epilimonol did not elicit significant internal toxicity, and feeding reductions were most likely exerted by action on chemoreceptors on mouthparts or in the preoral cavity.

    Notizen: Abstract (Z)-7-Dodecenol failed to interrupt pheromone-mediated anemotactic responses by male cabbage looper moths,Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in a wind tunnel when released 5 cm crosswind on both sides of the pheromone source or 10 cm upwind of the source to create an overlapping plume downwind. Significant inhibitory effects of (Z)-7-dodecenol were observed when released with the six-component pheromone blend from the same septum or abutting septa. These results indicate that (Z)-7-dodecenol needs to be received simultaneously with the pheromone blend to inhibit the anemotactic responses of males to the sex pheromone. We suggest that this feature and the filamentous nature of pheromone plumes render pheromone signals relatively protected from background chemical noise that may originate from pheromone plumes of other insect species. Unless filaments from a pheromone signal and an inhibitor arrive simultaneously, the integrity of the signal is maintained.

    Notizen: Abstract Prolonged preexposure (three days) of maleTrichoplusia ni to its six-component sex pheromone blend or its major pheromone component, (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate, reduced subsequent upwind flight responses to a pheromone source. Preexposure to (Z)-7-dodecenol increased upwind flight responses to a pheromone source combined with (Z)-7-dodecenol. The impact of long-term preexposures was moderate when compared to the more immediate effects of background noise. When (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate was presented as background noise, all maleT. ni failed to respond to a plume of the full pheromone blend. However, most moths succeeded in locking on to the pheromone plume and contacting the pheromone source in the presence of the five minor pheromone components as background noise. When (Z)-7-dodecenol was released as background noise the response rate to a pheromone source containing (Z)-7-dodecenol was increased dramatically. This indicates that males became adapted to (Z)-7-dodecenol while responding to the pheromone source. The results of this study indicate that both long-term preexposure treatments and immediate exposure to background noise can limit the ability of maleT. ni to respond to sex pheromone sources.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Résumé Les effets de l'épilimonol, dérivé de la limonine, ont été observés sur l'alimentation et la ponte de L. decemlineata au cours d'expériences d'alimentation brèves ou prolongées. L'épilimonol à 10 à 30 μg/cm2 réduit de 42 à 65% la prise de feuillage de Solanum tuberosum lors d'expériences sans choix. Au cours d'expériences prolongées, l'épilimonol à 10 μg/cm2 empêche la ponte et provoque la mort des adultes. Aucune accoutumance des adultes à l'épilimonol n'est apparue quant à l'alimentation et à la ponte. La ponte commence 3 à 5 jours après des traitements à l'épilimonol de 9 et 25 jours. Le jeûne supérieur à 16/jour provoque aussi la mortalité des adultes et supprime la ponte et peut être le mécanisme initial dû à l'épilimonol. Cependant, dans des expériences brèves de choix entre des rondelles de feuilles de pommes de terre traitées à 10 μg/cm2 et non traitées, L. decemlineata ne choisit pas particulièrement les rondelles non traités. On peut ainsi estimer que l'épilimonol n'a que des effets mineurs ou est sans effet sur la sélection de l'hôte par L. decemlineata. La régression de la prise de nourriture pourrait être due à l'action sur les sensilles gustatives de la bouche ou de de la cavité préorale qui sont moins impliquées dans le processus de sélection de l'hôte et plus responsables de la prise de nourriture.
    Notizen: Abstract Epilimonol, a limonin derivative, was tested in short and long term feeding bioassays against Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), for feeding reduction and ovipositional suppression. At dosages of 10 to 30 μg/cm2, epilimonol reduced feeding by 42% to 65% in short term no-choice assays. However, beetles did not strongly select untreated potato leaf discs over epilimonol-treated (10 μg/cm2) ones in short term choice assays. In long term tests, epilimonol at 10 μg/cm2 remained effective against feeding, caused mortality, and suppressed oviposition. Starvation (〉16 hours/day) also caused mortality and suppressed oviposition.

    Notizen: Abstract Adventitious shoot regeneration could be obtained from more than 80% of the calluses initiated from stem explants of watercress (Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum) by using an induction medium and a shoot regeneration medium. The induction medium contained 1.15 μM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and 5 μM thidiazuron; the shoot regeneration medium was composed of 0.5 μM thidiazuron and 2.25 μM 6-benzylaminopurine. This regeneration procedure was incorporated into an Agrobacterium-mediated transformation procedure for gene transfer into watercress. Factors affecting transformation included preculture, selection agents, use of tobacco nurse cells, and the length of coculture. A transgenic line of watercress transformed with a wild-type Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal gene, cry1Ia3, was not toxic to larvae of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), presumably due to premature polyadenylation of the transcript encoded by this gene in the plant.
